From the Author
"Your intellect isthe fundamental attachment between you and God; The miraculous merits whichmake you yourself; are the very traits of God himself; and it is your end as awizard, witch or necromancer to use them in his name and for a just cause. From the moment ofcreation, you are a daydreamer; you imagine, think and never stop fantasizing, just as a child should. , As you grow, your guardians force you to acknowledge"their reality"; slowly killing the wizard inside you. This trickery was inventedby mystery destroyers and magic murderers, and the only way to defeat it, is ifwe will all return to our childhood state, day dreaming and fantasizing." -(Osari the Wise;1907.) --"The peaceful equilibrium betweenmagic, logic, fairness and common practicality was intermitted by the Catholic cathedralin the early 500s; a sorcerer will fear teaching the magical lessons of hispack to his kin, from fear of criminal prosecution by the church. A mother willfear to mend or charm for fear of hanging from a gibbet as a Wiccan, whose hourhad come.

Little by little, the privileges ofmagic will be defeated by the overflow of human reason in ages to come, magicwill be forgotten, and the good will of God will no longer be accountedfor; until, one day, it shall reoccur.

For the bewilderment of the Catholics,Israelites and the Greeks, God's angels shall come down upon us with both furyand fondness, the righteous shall prosper, and the evil shall fall..." - Osarithe Wise, 1907.

poor quality
By Michael W. Harm
Most of the book is rehashed history or recommendations to read other books.

The techniques are fairly simplistic and has a monotheistic perspective that runs through the whole book. Do druids really think they get their power from the Christian god the book seems to imply it is so. Interesting outlook.

The things crafted in the book don't really seem to have practical workable methods. You make a magic ring for instance by finding bits of gold and silver and making a mold and melting it down. Not a lot of information on various sigils or designs or rituals to make the ring empowered.

Overall I would rate this bleah.

The part on runes was sketchy and had very little knowledge or practical exercises. Eldred's books were far superior.

Good for beginners
By Eddie Moore
The book provides a lot of historical information, defiantly don't do justice to their website, which gives a lot more info on the subjects.
the book itself is very basic, and i would recommend it to people who are just getting into the subject of magic and want to understand the core basics; however, if you have prior experience in the craft, you will find this book not to be anything special; one good thing about it that it teaches some methods of "generating mana" by meditating, something that other authors on the subject don't really focus on.

A useful book to have on hand
By Keith Bukovich
While enrolled in a college course in "nuclear chemistry" I used the 1982 hardcover edition of this book that was published by Halsted Press, a division of John Wiley & Sons of New York. While an unexpected but positive financial opportunity caused me to cancel my semester of study midway through, I read and worked with Dr. Arnikar's book long enough to appreciate it.

Dr. Hari Jeevan Arnikar is Professor Emeritus in Chemistry at the University of Poona and has had wide research experience. After receiving his Ph.D. from the Banaras Hindu University, he worked in the laboratories of the College de France, in Paris and obtained his Dr.es-Sc. Later, he worked as a Fulbright Visiting Scholar at the University of Wisconsin, Madison. Dr. Arnikar has also been a consultant to UNESCO in the Pilot Project for the Teaching of Chemistry in S.E. Asia, Bangkok.

As the Amazon.com description above mentions, this book presents theories of nuclear structure and stability, types of radioactivity and nuclear reactions, including fission and fusion, principles of nuclear reactor and elements of radiation chemistry. Also, typical applications of isotopes and nuclear radiation in research, medicine, and industry are described often with examples drawn from the author's work.

One of the things I liked about this book was that physical concepts, often left out in books for chemists (and students), are presented here clearly in small steps to help in the understanding of the material in question. I found this to be a very positive element in favor of the book and the author's approach. In addition, I found that numerous examples were worked out with the same objective. This makes for a book that one may go to easily at some future point for review and, therefore, belongs on the shelf of concerned students and professionals alike.

It is worth noting too, that SI units are used in general in this book along with some notes explaining these units (and their cgs equivalents). Selected problems with answers are found at the end of each chapter.

I believe this book was originally intended to meet the needs of advanced undergraduates and beginning Graduate students of both Indian and American universities offering nuclear and radiation chemistry. It also, in my view, serves as an introduction to more advanced books on the subject of nuclear chemistry. (Chapterwise references and a fairly comprehensive bibliography are provided as a guide for further study too.)

Having said all this, the book is not without its present day shortcomings. First, it was written and published almost thirty years ago so it cannot speak to recent developments and advances in the field of nuclear chemistry. (Still, chapter 6 on nuclear fission and chapter 7 on nuclear reactors hold up well in my view and are nicely presented.) Another slight problem some may have with this book is that while it is written clearly, it is written for an academic audience. Mature thinking students and other similiar individuals should not have a problem with this but it is not a book for the general reader.

I recommend this book be in the library of students, teachers, and those whose occupation involves the physical sciences and engineering -- especially with nuclear overtones. I found it to be a very useful book to turn to when one desires a straightforward explanation on some question or topic involving nuclear chemistry. I cannot say if Dr. Arnikar is still with us, but he deserves credit for writing a useful text on the subject that is accessible to many readers.

Cuba's Car Culture: Celebrating the Island's Automotive Love Affair, by Tom Cotter

Welcome to Cuba's automotive time capsule, filled with classic cars.

The story of how Cuba came to be trapped in automotive time is a fascinating one. For decades, the island country had enjoyed healthy tourism trade and American outpost status, and by the 1950s it had the highest per capita automotive purchasing of any Latin American country - its middle class ensured an interesting variety of vehicles plying the roads. But when Cuba fell to communist rebels in 1959, so ended the inflow of new cars. Since then, trade embargo forced Cuba's car enthusiasts to develop a unique and insular culture, one marked by great creativity, such as:

Keeping a car alive with no opportunity to acquire replacement parts

Customizing a car with no access to aftermarket parts

Drag racing with no drag strip

In many ways, Cuba is an automotive time warp, where the newest car is a 1959 Chevy or perhaps one of the Soviet Ladas. Cuba's Car Culture offers an inside look at a unique car culture, populated with cars that have been cut off from the world so long that they've morphed into something else in the spirit of automotive survival.

Authors Tom Cotter and Bill Warner (founder of the Amelia Island Concours) take readers of Cuba's Car Culture on a whirlwind tour of all things automotive, beginning with Cuba's pre-Castro car and racing history and bringing us up to today's lost collector cars, street racing, and the challenges of keeping decades-old cars on the road. The book is illustrated throughout with rare historical photos as well as contemporary photos of Cuba's current car scene. For anyone who enjoys classic cars, from old Chevy Bel-Airs to Studebakers to Ford Fairlanes, a cruise around Cuba will make you feel like a kid in a candy store.

Almost as good as being there
By D. C. Smith
Almost as good as being there! Great current photography and historical photos of the pre-Castro era. Cuba was America's largest car importer in the pre-Castro era, and the Cuban love of the American automobile is apparent in the text and pictures. A must for any automotive library.

Cruelty and Laughter: Forgotten Comic Literature and the Unsentimental Eighteenth Century, by Simon Dickie

Eighteenth-century British culture is often seen as polite and sentimental—the creation of an emerging middle class. Simon Dickiedisputes these assumptions in Cruelty and Laughter, a wildly enjoyable but shocking plunge into the forgotten comic literature of the age. Beneath the surface of Enlightenment civility, Dickie uncovers a rich vein ofcruel humorthatforces us to recognize just how slowlyordinary human sufferings became worthy of sympathy.

Delving into an enormous archive of comic novels, jestbooks, farces, variety shows, and cartoons,Dickie findsa vast repository of jokes about cripples, blind men, rape, and wife-beating. Epigrams about syphilis and scurvy sit alongside one-act comedies about hunchbacks in love. He shows us that everyone—rich and poor, women as well as men—laughed along. In the process,Dickie also expands our understanding of many of the century’s major authors, including Samuel Richardson, Lady Mary Wortley Montagu, Tobias Smollett, Frances Burney, and Jane Austen. He devotes particular attention to Henry Fielding’s Joseph Andrews, a novel that reflects repeatedly on the limits of compassion and the ethical problems of laughter. Cruelty and Laughter is an engaging, far-reaching study of the other side of culture in eighteenth-century Britain.

Review
“This book is a prodigiously erudite reminder that the eighteenth century was not just polite, but vicious. Drawing on jestbooks, verse satires, comic fiction, and a plethora of overlooked sources, Dickie depicts a literary, visual, and physical world replete with cruelty, ribald denigration, and low and bawdy humor. Skillfully combining textual exegesis with a profound knowledge of recent social history, he shows that mockery of the lower orders, beggars, and the poor; jests and japes at the expense of the crippled, deformed, and handicapped; and ribald enthusiasm for sexual violence and rape were part of a cruel social world in which the unprivileged and disadvantaged, even as they sometimes excited compassion and sympathy, were just as likely to excite a disdain that ran the full gamut of verbal and physical violence.”

(John Brewer, California Institute of Technology)

“A pioneering work. Dickie uncovers a rich, long-neglected archive and challenges received wisdom on virtually every page. A joy to read and a revelation.”

(Toni Bowers, University of Pennsylvania)

“With great verve, occasional disgust, and intermittent outrage, Simon Dickie portrays a society of entrenched hierarchies in which entitled aristocrats entertained themselves with cripple dances, libertine young bucks wreaked havoc in both popular fiction and common reality, and the poor and disabled were the inevitable butts of cruel jokes on and off the page. Working against common scholarly assumptions but backed by ample evidence, he argues that delight in the suffering of others was one thing that all classes of eighteenth-century society shared. Throughout he combines the virtues of a historian and a literary critic with a creative and self-conscious awareness of the complex relation of representation to reality. One of the most original, readable, educational, and entertaining books in the field of eighteenth-century studies I have read in the past decade.”

(Helen Deutsch, University of California, Los Angeles)

“This excellent and thoroughly researched book argues clearly that eighteenth-century readers read—and worse, enjoyed laughing at—jokes that we would find in incredibly bad taste; and in that, Dickie sees the key to the persistence of an entire way of thinking that is now lost to us. Bringing a tremendous amount of material to our attention, he takes a provocative stance against what he sees as an idealized image of the eighteenth century and points to numerous avenues for future research. Terrific and important,Cruelty and Laughterwill be of great interest to scholars of eighteenth-century history, literature, popular culture, humor, and the history of the book.”

(John O’Brien, author of Harlequin Britain: Pantomime and Entertainment, 1690–1760 John O'Brien)

“Placing Fielding, the greatest humourist of his time, back amongst his contemporaries and responding to the comedy of his writing as his first readers would have done is a masterly stroke in this scholarly, original and highly readable book.”

(Literary Review)

“The examples [Dickie] presents are convincing—and largely shocking to modern sensibilities.”

(Barnes and Noble Review)

“Dickie unearthed a huge number of 18th-century jest books, poems, bodily dysfunction and rape jokes, ramble novels, and farces—most of them hitherto ignored or neglected—and here offers a valuable and engrossing exploration of them. . . . Highly recommended.”

(Choice)

“Dickie mounts a compelling case against what he calls ‘the politeness-sensibility paradigm,’ by resurrecting a jeering counter-discourse that reveled in human suffering and physical affliction.” (London Review of Books)

“Dickie . . . has done a brilliant job illuminating a dark side to the British psyche some 300 years ago.” (Sun News Corp)

“A brilliant and beautifully written book, Cruelty and Laughter introduces its readers to a world of violent mayhem, both rhetorical and real. . . . Such is the transformative experience of reading this book that I, for one, will never look at the mid-eighteenth century again in quite the same way.” (H-Net Reviews)

“Astonishing. . . . If you think you know the eighteenth century, you will not look at it the same way after reading this book.” (The Dispatch)

“Dickie’s book is energetic and full of perceptive detail, and assembles a great deal of little-known material.” (Claude Rawson Studies in English Literature 1500-1900)

“Dickie wants to study experience, the ‘reality’ behind the jokes, and to this end he complements his literary analysis with social history. He does a masterly job of using shreds of evidence to reconstruct not only a culture of cruel jokes but also the society from which these sprung. . . . Dickie has given us a terrific account of the unsentimental eighteenth century, deepening our understanding of how malicious laughter was an enduring element of British culture.” (Karen Harvey Journal of British Studies)

“This book is a genuinely interesting and important contribution to scholarship. Anyone interested in the comic writers of the eighteenth century will find Cruelty and Laughter worthwhile. Dickie has changed the way we should conceive of eighteenth-century humor and altered our understanding of what readers enjoyed reading. This book makes possible critical reassessments of Fielding, Smollett, Sterne, and others that take into account the reading public’s taste for cruel comedy.” (The Eighteenth-Century Intelligencer)

“Dickie has performed a valuable service by digging deep in eighteenth-century popular (and for that matter high) culture and unearthing forgotten texts and the attitudes they project that prove his point beyond any doubt. His scholarship is thorough, indeed comprehensive, and his book is richly informative. . . . Masterful scholarship. . . . I will never again speak glibly of the Age of Sensibility.” (John Richetti Age of Johnson)

A New View of the Eighteenth Century
By Rob Hardy
If you had lived in mid-eighteenth century England, you would undoubtedly have heard the joke, and probably many times, about that jolly fellow Beau Nash, who had many tales told of him, some of which may even have been true. One day, this particular one goes, in the grove, he joined some ladies, and asked one of them, who had a crooked back, whence she came? "Straight from London," came the reply, whereupon the irrepressible Nash rejoindered, "Indeed, Madam, then you must have been confoundedly warped along the way." The story was told and retold, and printed in jestbooks over and over again because they shamelessly plagiarized each other. It brought great laughter, but a couple of centuries later, we are likely to be embarrassed by the callousness of the joke; one does not make fun of hunchbacks. Not only that, but we have the impression that eighteenth century British society had refined manners, polite interpersonal dealings, and Christian concern for all. Not a bit of it, if you look at the jokes and stories recalled in _Cruelty & Laughter: Forgotten Comic Literature and the Unsentimental Eighteenth Century_ (University of Chicago Press) by professor of English Simon Dickie. It was not just those with crooked backs that were the butts of jokes. The distasteful subjects of humor Dickie catalogues include amputees, blind people, rape victims, the indigent, dwarves, the deaf, squinters, stammerers, Welshmen, and many more. Dickie's astonishing work looks at the profuse books of jokes, the forgotten novels, and even the trial records of the age, and finds that the comparative politeness we find, say, in the novels of Jane Austen seems a completely different world. "This was not a polite world," writes Dickie, "but `an impolite world that talked much about politeness.'" The book is an eye-opener.

The lack of politeness, and even more, the aggressive and cruel humor, we might think were restricted to the lower classes, but the jestbooks quoted here were relatively expensive texts. They were often put out by the same printers who published classics, sacred literature, or sentimental novels. There were "deformity comedies," plays with a plot founded on the wooden leg, dwarfism, or hunched back of the main character. Within comedies, or used as an intermission entertainment, could be seen "crutch dances," in which humpbacks and amputees danced around, or "elephant capers" of a grossly fat dancer. It was fun to tell an old woman that sixpence had been dropped in a puddle and watch her go after the nonexistent coin. Summoning a midwife for a lady who had no need of one was quite the giggle. Among the most unpleasant founts of humor here are jokes having to do with rape. "Rape jokes are everywhere one looks: in cheap pamphlets and song sheets as well as more literary texts. The same dirty jokes show up in ballad operas and then again as asides in otherwise morbid tragedies. As they migrate across genres, these jokes take every possible form; the only constant, in fact, is that the woman is always lying." There were jokes about how rape trials were conducted, but Dickie has found from actual transcripts that there was levity in the courtroom, and appreciative laughter, for a crime that easily leant itself to guffaws. A witness for the defendant in an Old Bailey proceeding, for instance, was on the stand so that he could insult the woman who had brought charges. "She is a very vile girl," he testified. "I have seen a young man upon her with his breeches down, and her cloaths up, and another man lie by the side of her in a stable. I have laid with her a great many times myself." It is not surprising that rape cases were seldom brought to court, and once there, seldom were decided in the victim's favor.

There is a fine chapter here on the jokes and pranks undergone by the longsuffering Parson Adams in Henry Fielding's _Joseph Andrews_, showing how Fielding was to use familiar anti-cleric humor. Dickie has also surveyed far less important or familiar novels of the period ("shameless rubbish") that he seems, in some instances, to have enjoyed. This is one of the liveliest of academic books because of the nature of the subject. Dickie gives plenty of examples of humor, and a reader can enjoy laughing at the ones of lesser cruelty, and can enjoy astonishment that the crueler jokes were ever considered funny. If you think you know the eighteenth century, you will not look at it the same way after reading this book.

From the Inside Flap
Preface

This book describes the theory and applications of timing verification of application-specific integrated circuits (ASICs). Timing verification is a relatively new concept, which is why most books on digital systems do not cover the issue. This book lays out the fundamental principles of effective timing verification, and it makes good use of the examples that reflect the current issues facing logic designers.

The following items characterize this book:

Timing verification as opposed to functional verification is the primary focus. (Functional simulation has been adequately covered in other books.)Principles and techniques as opposed to specific tools are emphasized. Once designers understand the underlying principles of timing analysis, they can apply them with various timing tools.Design flow for deep-submicron ASICs and FPGA designs are fully covered.Numerous design examples and HDL codes to illustrate the concepts discussed in the book are provided.

This book is to be used for self-study by practicing engineers. Design and verification engineers who are working with ASICs and FPGAs will find the book very useful. Upper-level undergraduate and graduate students in electrical engineering can use it as a reference book in design courses in timing analysis and related topics.

The material covered in this book requires some understanding of the Electronic Design Automation (EDA) tools and an initial course in logic design.

The book is organized into two parts:

Part I (chapters 1 and 2) introduces the fundamental concepts involved in timing verification. Including clock definitions, multicycle paths, false paths, and phase-locked loops.

Part II (chapters 3 and 4) covers specific timing issues related to ASICs and FPGAs, respectively.

Chapter 1 gives an overview of timing verification and static timing analysis. It contrasts timing verification with functional verification. Typical goals of timing verification in digital systems are presented. This chapter ends with an example of interface timing analysis.

Chapter 2 introduces the concepts of timing analysis with design examples. It specifically discusses such clocking methods as gated clocks, multifrequency clocks, and multiphase clocks. It introduces the concepts of multicycle paths, false paths, and timing constraints (such as setup, hold, recovery, and pulse width).

Chapter 3 discusses the deep submicron ASIC design flow and application of timing analysis in the design process. It includes discussion of prelayout and postlayout timing verification. The chapter also discusses behavioral and structural RTL coding for timing, synthesis and timing constraint, and the ASIC sign-off checklist. We make the concepts concrete with numerous examples.

Chapter 4 discusses timing concepts in programmable logic-based designs. It covers design flow, timing parameters, timing analysis, and HDL synthesis and software development systems. We present the most commonly used programmable logic devices (Actel, Altera, and Xilinx) and associated timing issues.

Appendices A, B, and C discuss the EDA timing tools of PrimeTime, Pearl, and TimingDesigner respectively.

Appendix D covers some concepts of transistor-level timing verification.— Farzad Nekoogar

It's About Time

In today's high-speed designs, timing analysis is critical to success. This is the first book to focus exclusively on these crucial timing issues, with special emphasis on timing verification of ASICs. Timing Verification of Application Specific Integrated Circuits (ASICs) highlights principles and techniques over specific tools. This method makes the materials applicable to a variety of logic design approaches, especially in the field of deep submicron digital design. Topics include:

  • Clock definitions, multicycle paths, false paths, and phase-locked loops
  • Behavioral and structural RTL coding for timing
  • Timing analysis of FPGAs
  • Pre and Post layout timing analysis
  • Synthesis and Timing constraints
  • EDA timing tools

Numerous design examples and Verilog codes offer practical illustrations of all the concepts. Timing Verification of Application Specific Integrated Circuits (ASICs) is a must for all logic designers concerned with the accuracy of timing and clock issues.

good book for beginners on FPGA
By Mr. I. Nagy
This book is very good for beginners starting working with FPGAs. Probably ASIC designers need some more, I dont know I am not one of them. Timing analysis is a topic which is unfortunatelly not very well known by lots of engineers working on small/medium size FPGA projects. For them, I would recommend to buy/read this book. It was written 10 years ago for ASICs and now it is still good for FPGAs for learning how to setup simple timing constraints on smaller FPGAs, (for example a PCI, IDE or LPC bus interfaces on a 100kgate Xilinx Spartan-III FPGA) or how to design our logic for higher speed. I knew some things about timing analysis already, so this book taught me a little more. Now I have purchased the "Static Timing Analysis for Nanometer Designs", which is much thicker and more detailed, so I hope I will learn a lot more from that one.
Although these books say ASIC and nanometer-design in their titles, they provide valuable information also for design engineers working with FPGAs, CPLDs or board-level designs.

Very good book for the beginners
By Art Malik
This is a really good book for the beginners to understand the timing verification in ASIC flow. There are not many books in this area which explain things clearly. Most of them get lost in the syntax and modules of coding. 90% percent of ASIC design is done with synopsys tools and book authors tell more about the tool syntax than why they are there. This book has minimum of tool syntax. It is SIMPLE and that is its greatest quality. Most people who have reviewed the book have given good ratings. The one that is bad must be from an experienced person. This book is not for an expert in this field.

A "must-have" book for practicing ASIC engineers
By Eugene A. Davis
The book has detailed information on timing issues of ASICs and FPGAs, such as pre and post layout timing analysis. Several comprehensive examples on timing analysis using different available STA tools makes the book a practical guide for verification engineers. The book also covers some RTL coding examples for timing, however it is made solely for timing verification not a book for learning HDL languages, therefore trying to criticize the programming part of the book as in previous review is irrelevant let alone trying to correct spelling.

A lucid, beautiful novel with a sincere and sarcastic tone
By parisiangirl@hotmail.com
Solal is the son of the chief rabbi of Cephalonia. He is on his way to become a highly recognised diplomat for the United Nations. He then falls for a sweet and beautiful French catholic girl, just on the eve of WWII. They get together, passionate, ignorant of their families' disapprovals. But the growing antisemitism affects Solal's love and behaviour, and he becomes sarcastic, irritable and guilty, in spite of Aurore's efforts to keep their love alive. This is written in a beautiful, original style by a wonderful and sincere author who deserve international recognition. His tone gets you to the insights of human brain, which he analyzes with an incredible lucidity. Read it !
