Enthrall, by M. R. Reed

After years of being a helpless witness to his father’s physical and emotional abuse towards his family, seventeen-year-old Miles Boswell has just about reached his breaking point. He dreams of the day where he can leave everything behind and begin a new life on his own...that is, until he discovers that he has the ability to control people’s minds. And suddenly, the odds are overwhelmingly in his favor. At first, Miles can’t believe his luck. Elements of his life that had previously been unavoidable nuisances -- his father’s rude, drunken comments, his brother’s bratty outbursts -- were now situations that could be manipulated at the ease of a focused command. But what begins as the answer to all of his problems soon causes him to question his every thought when he captures the attention of August Sylvan, who seems to be the girl of his dreams. She shares his aversion to alcohol and drugs, has fantastic taste in music, and most shocking of all -- she wants to go out with him. As someone who has limited experience with girls, Miles can’t help but wonder -- where do his powers end, and where does reality begin? He has no way of telling if August is truly interested in him, or if she’s simply reacting to his attraction towards her. At the same time, he finds himself at constant odds with his morals and his potentially warped sense of justice. At what point may it be considered acceptable to subjugate the minds of others? Is there ever an appropriate time for such an action?

About the Author
Our formative years are the ones that stick with us the most--you know, those tirelessly frustrating yet unforgettably magical moments that shape us into the people that we will become. The music that I liked as a teenager, the books that I read, the relationships that I created (and destroyed)...those are the things that I think truly formed the adult that I am today. I still love those things. I still think about those things. I still harbor a lot of anger in relation to the events that I experienced as a teenager, and it does nothing but fuel my creative spirit. And that's what I like to write about: Teenagers, and all of their idiosyncrasies, and concerns, and that whole unintentionally egocentric view that they have about their worlds. I find it fascinating. I'm thankful every day that I'm no longer a teenager, but I have to admit that it's a interesting time to look back on. Miles and August encompass a lot of me, and my experiences, and my observations. The music, books, and beliefs that I held at that time inspired me to write about the events that take place in Enthrall. My intense hope is that somebody reads it and is able to relate, or get through a difficult time, and just know that somebody understands what he/she is going through (at least a little bit.) That's what music and books did for me. I hope to pay it forward.

Highly Entertaining - Young Adult Page Turner
By Gene Scott
I purchased this book for a nephew who, unfortunately, does not like to read books. Enthrall was recommended by a friend as a young adult story that would resonate with today's teenagers. Perhaps because the primary topics are sex, music, superpowers, teen angst, bent but not broken families, bullies, mean girls, mean ex-boyfriends and more sex.

I started to glance through Enthrall while waiting for a World Series game to start, and, before I knew it, I had read six chapters. M. R. Reed uses an interesting writing convention that really propels the story. Odd-numbered chapters (1, 3, 5, etc.) are written in the voice of Miles, the teenage male character. Even-numbered chapters are written in the voice of August, the teenage female character. I found myself eagerly looking forward to the ensuing chapter so I could find out what the other person was really thinking.

Each of the protagonists is from a dysfunctional home environment. Miles' father is a drunk who verbally and physically abuses Miles' mom. August's father leaves his family for his gay boyfriend. Needless to say the stress levels are high for all of the members of both families. It is against this background that Miles and August find each other. The writing is crisp and the dialogue is entertaining and believable. When speaking in their own voice, Miles and August each exhibit and alternate among their insecurities, angst and strong self-belief. When viewed by the other person each seems to have his or her life together.

The fun is in the two finding each other, exploring their sexuality, dealing with their problems and living their lives as best they can under very trying circumstances. Miles finds that he has an ability to make others do as he wants. Will he use that ability for good to help he and August conquer their problems, or will he use it for petty, selfish purposes and to punish his enemies? Read the book and find out.

Highly recommended, but it does contain quite a bit of sex and liberal use of the F word.

Struggle of good and evil with music overtones
By Melissa
If you like superpowers, music, teen angst, this is for you. Well written, by someone who knows and understands the actual topics in this book. It's may not be fantasy but who doesn't live in a fantasy world. I have yet to finish this book but let me say I can't wait!

fantasy and music
By parker2030
Independent Reviewer for Paranormal Romance and Authors that Rock
This book follows the relationship between Miles and August. Miles comes from an abusive home where he sees his alcoholic father belittle his mother. August is new to town and is living with her mother ever since her father left them. Miles has never had a girlfriend before so when August approaches him he is confused. August has had a bad experience with boyfriends until she meets Miles but she finds herself wondering if it can last.
I loved the style of this book the odd numbered chapters are written from Miles point of view and the even chapters are from August’s point of view. This allowed the book to flow well and made you want to keep reading so you could see what the other person was thinking. The characters are well written and it is easy to visualise the characters and settings. The plot has a fantasy element that is unique and adds another dimension to the story. There is depth to the main characters that enables you to connect to them.
I would recommend this book to the YA market as I feel they will be able to easily relate to the teenage leads. A well written and developed book that drew me in, making me want to know what happened.

Review
"Sara Bareilles is one of my favorite humans, and in my opinion, one of the finest singers and pop music artists of our time... This book, like her songs, is like having a conversation with the lady herself." (Ben Folds, from the book's foreword)

"Her prose has a natural rhythm, and the stories behind each song are organically woven throughout. Fans will be more enamored, as, like Bareilles’s music, this biography resonates with authentic and hard-won truths.” (Publishers Weekly)

“A chart-topping singer/songwriter exposes ‘the inner workings of my mind and my heart’ through this intimate essay collection anchored with music and humor… Bareilles conveys her life and career in a series of heartfelt, confessional ruminations written with the passion with which she hones her musical craft, forming an entertaining and candid scrapbook chockablock with memories, lyrics, stories, and photographs… A breezy, upbeat, and honest reflection of this multitalented artist.” (Kirkus Reviews)

“Reading the book is like listening to your friend share a really good story over a long overdue coffee date—it just feels so honest.“ (StyleCaster.com)

"Bareilles pours her heart and soul into these essays." (Associated Press)

Sounds Like Sara (And It Is Beautiful)
By JRW
If you liked Sara Bareilles before, you can't help but like her even more after reading this book. Plain and simple, she is a powerful writer. This applies both to her music and now this refreshing collection of essays on her life thus far. Just as she writes music that is somehow able to resonate deep with the heart, she brings that same courage and vulnerability to this book.

The book is really a bit of a memoir filled with stories of her growing up to what she has learned up to this point in her life and career. It is a collection of eight essays all based around the story behind the song. Once Upon Another Time, Gravity, Love Song, Beautiful Girl, Red, Many the Miles, Brave, and She Used to Be Mine.

If those songs weren't already moving enough, you will listen to them with a newfound appreciation and respect after finishing this book. Sara is clearly someone who has learned that facing her fears and moving forward anyways is the true definition of courage. Countless stories she tells are beautiful illustrations of what happens in this sweet place of surrender. That and a genuine gratitude for all she has been given and for the people who have taught her along the way.

What I love most about the book is that it is ultimately a recollection of her finding her own voice. And as she has shared glimpses of that in her music, it has helped others do the same. And isn't that what life is ultimately about? That as we share our truth, we give permission for others to do the same. And that it's never a one way streak. Somehow we end up inspiring each other to dive even deeper into revealing ourselves for who we really are. No doubt she has done just that in the writing of this book.

Her honesty about a whole range of topics from body image to a sound malfunction performing with Taylor Swift are all consistent with the kind of candor that her fans have come to know and love. I had to fight back tears in a restaurant as I finished her book today. The stories she shares from her own life as well as those of some of her fans are a reminder that we are all so uniquely different, yet also so much the same.

Many thanks to you, Sara, for continuing to share your voice. In your greatest moments of self-doubt to your highest moments of exhilaration, may you receive back the Love that you continue to pour out to this world.

I loved this book
By CNY_MusicFan
I loved this book . It's arranged in 8 essays, with the theme of each essay related to one of her songs. The tone of the book is totally Sara: funny, intelligent, and witty. If you love Sara and her music, you need to get this. Lots of nice photos of Sara through the years from when she was just a little girl through to the present time. If you have been a fan long enough to have read her blog posts back in the day, it's very much like those.

One of the essays came in the form letters from Sara to her younger self back to various important stages of her life. Very honest and sometimes very painful to read. You'll learn the real reason she left The Sing Off.

On the practical side, I was happy to see that book appears to be of good quality with thick paper and good binding.

I was expecting to like it, but I was not expecting it to ...
By Dartmouth2004
I first saw Sara Bareilles perform at Dartmouth College during my senior spring in 2004. She was opening for Maroon 5 and I had never heard of her before, but I was immediately drawn in by her powerful voice and emotional lyrics. A few years later I was working in New York City and saw that she was playing a show with Jon McLaughlin to promote her brand-new album, Little Voice. I bought tickets and was lucky enough to meet her after the show, at which point I told her how I'd been following her progress since seeing her at Dartmouth.

Sara and her music have continued to make a big impact on my life. In 2013 my fiance got me tickets to see her during her tour with OneRepublic. In 2014 I sang Sara's song "I Choose You" to my husband at our wedding. And yesterday I finished reading her book, which absolutely blew me away. I was expecting to like it, but I was not expecting it to grab me by the heart and squeeze until I was reeling. Sara's writing is so honest and pure, it felt like I was being given admission to her deepest inner secrets. I never knew that she struggled with her weight, body image, or depression and anxiety--just as I do. I had no idea that she left "The Sing Off" because the producers critiqued her wardrobe and wanted her to dress like some sparkly vapid pop star. And it came as quite a shock that she is just as insecure about her place in the world as the rest of us.

I read the book in one day and was incredibly sad that it wasn't ten times longer. It made me want to be her friend. It made me want to write her a letter. It made me want to say, Sara, your writing, your voice, and your soul are beautiful. Thank you for the gift you have given the world.

Aristotle on Desire (Cambridge Classical Studies), by Giles Pearson

Desire is a central concept in Aristotle's ethical and psychological works, but he does not provide us with a systematic treatment of the notion itself. This book reconstructs the account of desire latent in his various scattered remarks on the subject and analyses its role in his moral psychology. Topics include: the range of states that Aristotle counts as desires (orexeis); objects of desire (orekta) and the relation between desires and envisaging prospects; desire and the good; Aristotle's three species of desire: epithumia (pleasure-based desire), thumos (retaliatory desire) and boulsis (good-based desire - in a narrower notion of 'good' than that which connects desire more generally to the good); Aristotle's division of desires into rational and non-rational; Aristotle and some current views on desire; and the role of desire in Aristotle's moral psychology. The book will be of relevance to anyone interested in Aristotle's ethics or psychology.

Tall People Don't Jump: The curious behaviour of human beings, by Mr Shane Rodgers

Tall People Don't Jump turns the spotlight on the peculiar unwritten rules that govern modern society and our blind acceptance of conventions and obsessions that consistently defy logic. It explores our daily battle with our own brain, the bizarre challenges of raising children and the curious norms we have created around popular culture. The book turns the spotlight on our obsession with weather and space, our life-long quest for a car parking space and the awkward evolution of men from he-man, cave clubbers to largely-confused, new age, multidisciplinary post-homo sapiens. Then there is our struggle to keep up appearances, our guilty relationship with the mini-bar, elevator protocol, moving house and our manic determination to constantly celebrate milestones. This is a book for anyone who has lived, but can’t explain why.

Worth a Read
By Antonia
Tall people don't jump but I think everyone should jump at this opportunity to read Shane's satirical musings of human behaviour. This book would appeal to everyone, regardless of age, gender or upbringing. Shane's book is cleverly divided into delicious pieces of every day life, covering topics such as dreams, oddities and driving. With "ahhh, I know" and "gosh, exactly" moments for everyone to enjoy, this book really is a gem. With the use of clever word play, Shane conjures up numerous scenarios that have you chuckling throughout the day. From road rage to babies that "eat, poo, destroy" to claims that "humans were never meant to iron", which I completely agree with, I've got to thank the author for this great read. It's now living happily on my iPad for another rainy day.

A chipped diamond.
By KDeathflag
A fun and humorous romp through one mans view of the world. What held this back was an attempt, too blithe, to describe the U.S.A.s' political system and a poor understanding of 2nd ammendment geographic spread, as Abbott once said "boy, did that lay." Otherwise a fine read. (note to author. Make people pay for this. It is priced right and well worth the money.)

Unique and funny take on the curious behaviour of human beings
By colleen clur
I love this book. Shane covers all the quirks and foibles of human behaviour in a highly readable, succint style. Practically every modern human activity is subjected to his witty take, from hot-baked Christmas dinner in Australia, to the accumulation of "stuff", and why we can't take our eyes off mirrors. If you've ever wondered why men are not sexy in flanelette pyjamas, you will get the answer from this unique book. Highly recommended.

Sally Mann: Immediate FamilyFrom Aperture

First published in 1992, Immediate Family has been lauded by critics as one of the great photography books of our time, and among the most influential. Taken against the Arcadian backdrop of her woodland summer home in Virginia, Sally Mann's intimate photographs of her children reveal truths that embody the individuality of her own family yet ultimately take on a universal quality. With sublime dignity, acute wit and feral grace, Sally Mann's pictures explore the eternal struggle between the child's simultaneous dependence and quest for autonomy.
This reissue of Immediate Family has been printed using new scans and separations from Mann's original prints, which were taken with an 8-by-10-inch view camera, rendering them with a freshness and sumptuousness true to the original edition.
Sally Mann was born in Lexington, Virginia, in 1951. Her work has been exhibited around the world and is held by such institutions as The Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Museum of Modern Art and Whitney Museum of American Art, all in New York; San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; and Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Photography. By Terry Tee
This is a well-produced book of lovely family photographs. Some are unposed, but those that are posed are not elf-conscious, "studio-like" pictures, and the children do not seem to be inhibited, even when nude. My only criticism,if you could call it that, would be that the children all look so serious. A smile here or there would not go amiss.

What a Book
By Jim Lankford
Wonderful autobiography about a courageous, talented, free-spirited, and kind-hearted woman. It was absolutely absorbing to come to understand how her life experience was embodied in the subjects that she focused on. As a southerner, I was lead by Mann to recall once again what it was to grow up white in Louisiana in the fifties, and to understand in a deeper way how out of touch we whites actually were with blacks in general, but more specifically with our loving black maids, who raised us like their own children. Many of us sensed that something was fundamentally wrong with our lives, our churches, and our families, but we also knew that trying to talk about these things with our parents and pastors would not be well received. What cowards must of us were; I have always felt guilty about this, as Mann so bravely described in her own life. A stunning book, one of the best that I have read in years. Sally Mann is a national treasure.

The eye of the beholder
By Robert Ezerman
This book is so much more than just an appealing array of three often unclothed young siblings. Each photo repays many times over open-minded attentive scanning for components relevant to the observer. For example, I love the photo of Emmett ("Popsicle Drips") for its shotgun blast of simultaneous images and references which contrasts the physical vulnerability of this pre-pubescent lad with the in-your-face early genital maturation, his sturdy thighs vrs the twist of his still undeveloped trunk culminating in an extended arm in a "Christ on the cross" position: an impossibly rich photograph, not to mention its titled highlight, the popsicle drips (intrinsically early childhood) framing his budding genitals. While we know from Sally that many of the photos were "Hold still!" posed, none of her children's reactions were posed and in fact their reactions to being posed (boredom, annoyance) are so authentic their scowls are intrinsic and integral to the impact of each such photo. If your interest in this book is prurient, don't bother: on the other hand, the children's natural reactions to being posed and photographed could be an antidote, a form of therapy for the voyeur who might fantasize that the photographed nude child invited the attention.
