Jean Boyd is former Principal Research Fellow of the Sokoto History Bureau and Research Associate of the School of Oriental and African Studies at the University of London. She is the author of One Woman's Jihad, The Caliph's Sister, and Sultan Siddiq Abubakar III.

Beverly Mack is a Professor of African Studies in the Department of African and African American Studies and the Director of the University of Kansas African Studies Center (KASC), as well as a Courtesy Professor of Religious Studies. Prior to joining KU, Professor Mack taught at Yale University (Hausa language and African literature), Georgetown University (African history), and George Mason University (African literature).

Ticket to a Higher Quality of Life: Buy Yesterday

I found this gem of a book in a Dallas, TX bookstore before the official release date. As an educator with post graduate work in teaching children how to think as they learn (cognitive learning specialist), I loved Dr. Siegel's tag line "Inspire to Rewire". That is exactly what the book teaches you to do. I now work as an educational consultant and a parenting consultant. It is so evident that people are holding onto thoughts that are keeping them in their own prison of the mind due to the rigid or chaotic thinking and lack of cohesive brain integration. While working with a client, who was struggling with parenting issues, she began to develop Mindsight and understood the leftover issues keeping her trapped in a rigid mindset. After applying Dr. Siegel's suggestions to overcome the brain's rigidity, she realized that she received a message from her childhood implying that she was responsible for everything and everyone. We were both "inspired to rewire" her thinking, as it was apparent that she was learning to see her own rigid views on life. After three sessions, she began to change her own views on parenting and responsibility. For the first time in her life, she understood her story.

This book belongs in the hands of everyone in the helping profession. It's also written in such a way that your clients/parenting students, spouses, friends can use the meditations and other suggestions by Dr. Siegel to begin to rework their story into a cohesive narrative. Boomers will love this, as they search for reasons why their lives may not be working. Dr.Siegel's suggestions for rewiring take time, but I'm convinced they are well worth the time involved. Mindsight

I have read several other books authored by Dr. Siegel including the Developing Mind, The Mindful Mind and recently read Mindsight. As a neuropsychologist and clinical psychologist, I found the previous two books as well as Mindsight to be excellent in terms of bringing neuroscience and psychotherapy together in a very humanistic and readable manner. Many books about neuroscience are very technical and dry when it comes to practical application of science and theory. Dr. Siegel's presentation in Mindsight is very readable and practical with lots of wonderful examples of his thinking and the science behind his approach to psychotherapy which lets the reader adopt or adapt many of his strategies into their practice or their lives very easily. Even after 35 years of clinical practice, I have found that Dr. Siegel's approach has had a significant influence on how I conceptualize and understand my patients. I would highly recommend Mindsight to my colleagues and to my patients as I feel it would be very meaningful and useful to both.

not primarily about mindfulness therapy

I began reading "Mindsight" eagerly because I have a strong interest in mindfulness therapy and Siegel comes highly recommended. I found, however, that I could never get really engaged in the book. I pushed forward and read the whole thing, because Siegel obviously knows his stuff and writes in a clear and easy manner. But I didn't find what I was looking for.

It took a while to figure out why this book was not for me. Three reasons:

First, this book isn't primarily about mindfulness as its title suggests. Siegel has his own well-developed system of therapy. It includes mindfulness, yes, but also a lot of neuroscience, interpersonal therapy, and psychoanalysis (i.e., using insights about one's upbringing to bring about a cure.) Though the word psychoanalysis is never used, it seems to me that it is the dominant strand in his system.
For example, he writes, "With mindsight I was able to make use of the reflections that arose from that conflict [a run-in with his son] to arrive at more clarifying insights into my own childhood experiences."
So because mindfulness is not the main theme, or for some other reason, it is not very thoroughly developed--certainly not as much as in many other books I've read. Hence my disappointment.

The second problem I had is that the bulk of the book is made up of clinical cases (stories of the lives of the author's patients and the therapy he does with them) and stories from the author's life. I find that a few such cases in this kind of book can be illuminating, but reading one story after another becomes tedious.

Third, this book is not directed at helping the reader use the techniques that are mentioned.

None of these observations are meant as criticisms--just some information for anyone trying to make a decision. But if you are mainly interested in mindfulness therapy and would like to use it in your own life, I would recommend "The Mindful Way Through Depression" -- a clear, insightful, and practical book, written by researchers in the field.

beatnik, not beat

a recent article on diane diprima in the chicago tribune (4/19/2000) called di prima's "memoirs of a beatnik" - "a sort of insider's Beat exploitation book Di Prima wrote in 1968 for Maurice Girodias' Olympia Press in Paris because she needed money badly--and quickly." It goes on to state that "It is mostly accurate, [di prima] said, except for the sex parts."
with that said, i doubt the book aspires to make any type of high-brow feminist or literary statement. the fact that is does make any such statement can be attributed to the time in which it was written. it is basically an account of a young woman venturing out on her own in times when young women did not do such things. young women lived at home, maybe went away to college, met a nice suitable young man, and got married. maybe had a job as a typist in the meantime. sex was not something young women from nice families experimented with.
this is not to say the book does not have its merits. it is artfully written, intelligent, and poetic. it's a great look at the obstacles women faced when they decided to do their own thing, especially when that differed from society's norms. it's a peek inside the counterculture that was growing larger and larger thanks to a certain jack kerouac. all of this raises the book above being just plain old erotica. as a fan of beat writing and culture, i enjoyed the book very much.
of course, the drawback to this book is that someone reading this book without knowledge of the context in which it was published will come away from it with a view of the beats that is as cartoonish and two-dimensional as the rest of society's view was of them at the time. "oh wow, look, the beats were always having sex." - "oh yeah, man, that's what they were about. coffee, sex, and alcohol. (and bongos and poetry and black berets)"
maybe that's why the title of this book is "memoirs of a beatnik," and not "memoirs of a beat." major difference.

Not for the faint of heart. . . .

Not for the faint of heart, Memoirs of a Beatnik was a written-for-hire erotica piece. Di Prima delivers on raunch, providing a wild tale of sexual exploration that begins with the main character (arguably Di Prima, who drew heavily from personal experience) losing her virginity and ends with the character's first pregnancy. Though sex is certainly the book's most prominent feature, Di Prima, a respected poet and one of the few female Beat writers to make a name for herself, also discusses her own artistic development and describes the life of a starving artist in New York in the fifties. Di Prima's no-holds-barred honesty (the sex is real, with all of the funky smells and personal quirks) and her joyful appreciation for the finer details in life (e.g., a good cup of coffee, well-sugared) separates this book from the murky sea of erotica

Sensitive and Compelling Biography of the Lower East Side

Compelled to write after reading the other reviews-- I read this book when it was first published and found the sex (and feminism) secondary. This book read like a biography of most white women who chose to leave home and live on the Lower East Side in the 40s, 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s, and even 1990s. What blew me away was the quality of the prose and the parallels with the lives of women (usually White, Italian, or Jewish) I knew who moved there in the 1970s or 80s to recreate themselves. Side by side are Diane di Prima, Madonna di Ciccione (yes The Madonna), and countless women who have had 15 minutes or less of fame in the contemporary media. This book SINGS with the struggles and pain that many women put themselves through to break the yoke of suburbia. Read it and judge for yourself. Unfortunately, it is a tribute to how history repeats itself.

Mary Ellen Copeland, MA, MS, is a distinguished teacher, writer, and lecturer from Brattleboro, VT. A must for abused women

I was abused as a child and later continued to involve myself in relationships with emotionally abusive partners. I've been in and out of counseling for years, but I never realized how much the trauma of those younger years have impacted how I think, feel, and relate to experiences and people today. I purchased this book on the advice of my current counselor. I have to say that after a month of working in the workbook, I can already tell the difference in myself and my behavior. I would recommend this workbook to anyone who has been abused and is seeking to reclaim their lives from the hopeless heap of dispair and depression that so often occurs to those who have been vicitimzed.

Great workbook

I work in a mental health office and I use this workbook alone and with the TREM model. The clients that I have used it with enjoy it and have found it to be very helpful in their recovery.

Encouraging

I am really thankful for the women who co-authored this workbook. It really encourages healthy healing, self-love, self-confidence and most helpful for me, a positive self-image. I was even more impressed with the book because it affirms everything I am working through with my counselor, and she can help me through these gentle yet emotional steps. I highly recommend this text for all women yearning to heal their mind, body and spirit split. It is also a helpful text for women who struggle to name their traumatic experience as abuse due to all of the social taboos.

A VERY HELPFUL TOOL.

As with my birding, a passion of mine for over 50 years now, where I carry more than one field guide with me when I am out and about, the same hold true for butterflying. I use Kaufman's guide and I use the one being reviewed here. I don't think that any one single guide is adequate when watching or studying wildlife and to be frank, I get a bit annoyed when I cannot identify a group or species.

There are over 600 known butterflies that make their home in the lower 48 states. This book goes far in giving you the ability to identify a great many of them.

Now this is important! This work will not cover each and every single species and subspecies of butterflies you are likely to encounter, it will cover all of the major ones and it most certainly gives you a good representation of all of the known groups. In the author's words:

"Because many of the six hundred species fund in the Lower 48 states of the United States are very similar to one another, the approach I have taken in this book, with many of these groups, is to allow you to identify an unknown butterfly to group, rather than to species."

"If after experience, you decide that you would like to identify butterflies to specific species, even in difficult groups, then you can use my `Butterflies through Binoculars' series to do so."

Now I am not a lister...yet, so I find this approach quite workable for what I want. I spend a lot of time photographing these creatures and once I make general field notes, get a good shot, then it is easy enough to check specific species...difficult though in many cases if you are not an expert.

I find the photographs in this work to be clear and quite concise. They leave little guess work. They are of excellent quality and composition. The text is quite readable and addresses host plants, something I find invaluable. The author has given us some pretty good range maps and a wonderful introduction to the world of butterflying.

While this may not be the ultimate butterfly book, it is most certainly a good tool and I would hate to work in the field without it.

Butterfly groups, not species

This is really a guide to groups of butterflies, not species. Not all species are pictured, but characteristics of groups (e.g. elfins, coppers, buckeyes, small satyrs) are described. Each group gets 2 pages, one of which is usually taken up by a full page photo. There are 2-4 photos per group, plus a range map. The half page of text lists sizes, characteristics, habitats, food plants, gardening suggestions, abundance and sometimes miscellaneous bits -- each for the group as a whole. No scientific names are used, although a list is given at the back of the book.
There are introductory chapters on butterfly biology and conservation.
PROs: lovely photographs, gives a sense of the groups
CONs: not useful if you wish to know exactly which of the species you have.

Essential for the late summer garden

Beautifully illustrated (but not all species). Clearly written. Nicely organized by major groups. A good companion to Caterpillars in the Field and Garden by Allen et al.
