250 8x11 pages without a single picture, drawing, image, graphic, table, graph or equation. Zero. Not one.
The section on calculating the net impedance of speakers without an equation is hilarious: "This means turning each number on its head, then adding the numbers in this form, then changing the resulting number back to ordinary form."
I bet you have never thought of an XLR connector as "three small round pins/holes forming a triangular pattern inside an 18mm diameter circle."
There is also some questionable information, such as "the gain setting knobs [on an amplifier] should generally be set at maximum..." Never seen that one in print.
Much better choices for an actual book are Davis: "Sound Reinforcement Handbook" and Stark: "Live Sound Reinforcement".

DELESE WEAR is a professor of behavioral and community health sciences at Northeast Ohio Medical University. She has written and edited numerous books, including Educating for Professionalism: Creating a Culture of Humanism in Medical Education.

LESTER D. FRIEDMAN is chair of media and society at Hobart and William Smith Colleges. A leading scholar on media representations of medicine, he is the editor of Cultural Sutures: Medicine and Media and co-editor of Picture of Health: Medical Ethics and the Movies.

Insightful for people in the health field

Very well written and easy to follow. I bought this for my Medical Humanities class. It is actually very easy to follow along and I like how they author uses stories of their own or from other people. He explores many topics I did not think to consider until reading it. If you are curious about humanities in the health field and how to really understand people with different disabilities, this is really a good book to look into. I also like that he sections out the chapters so that maybe 3-5 chapters are in one section and they all have one idea in common.

The essays in this collection purport to set out a vision of the Health Humanities as an interdisciplinary field and also to provide an overview of key concepts, such as race, disability, death and dying, the body, and aging. I was disappointed that each section includes a set of articles on the key concept, but does not provide a general overview of that topic for newcomers to the field. I assigned this book in a graduate class hoping that students would gain a basic sense of key theorists, terms, and definitions for each topic. The book reads instead as more of a typical edited collection, so it was not useful for the purpose I imagined. I also hoped for more authors written by interdisciplinary teams of researchers, and more articles that explicitly described or modeled research methods and studies.

The Final Frontier

`Space' is a huge, heavy coffee table book, which contains some breathtaking and amazingly beautiful pictures. One of the first two page spreads to greet you is a crescent earth from 220,000 miles away- so large, all of it cannot fit on the pages. But, most of the book consists of large and small diagrams and illustrations to explain facts such as the scale of the universe. The diagrams could easily be understood by younger children. However the quarter to half page paragraphs and explanations would probably be at a high school level - so this is not just a book devoted to younger children, they could grow into it and adults will not feel they are missing some information.

If you are fascinated by space and even if you have seen many of NASA's photographs, you can still appreciate the stunning pictures here; like an astronauts view of the earth. The subjects covered include the earth and moon including the far side, also the solar system, the stars, planets and beyond to the galaxy and far reaches of space and exploration. Telescopes and all means of scientific investigation are very well covered, even speculating how the universe might end and the study of deep space.

This volume is done well and would be fascinating to anyone who looks up at night with wonder.

For as long as we can remember there have been atlases of the earth. But what about an atlas for space? After all, it was famed physicist Stephen Hawking who declared that "I don't think the human race will survive the next thousand years unless we spread into space." For now, DK's "Space: From Earth to the Edge of the Universe" may be our guide.

The book covers, in easy to understand layman's terms, most of the sweeping aspects of space, various international space programs, the solar system and beyond. Chapters abound with well illustrated coverage of space stations, global launchsites, earth from space as well as the resources (atmosphere to oceans) that are affected by space.

Beyond the earth, our entire solar system, planets, moons and the sun are mapped out with ample details utilizing the latest photographs from NASA and other sources, highlighting not just the planets, but specific regions of the planets (the Valles Marineris and Tharsis regions of Mars, the rings of Saturn, the `red spot' of Jupiter, etc.) Beyond the planets, extensive data, photos and illustrations depict the specifications of galaxies like the 200,000,000,000 stars of the Milky Way, asteroids paths, comets, nearby and distant stars and a host of planetary nebulae. The vast array of equipment, both here on earth and launched into the cosmos is revealed in illuminating detail as well.

While not a scientific tome, per se, "Space: From Earth to the Edge of the Universe" is a comprehensive volume that will give the non-scientist a wide view of what's out there from the earth to faint objects that are billions of light years away. Combining the best of the NASA imagery from our universe is a broad goal, but one this 360-page, large format book seems to accomplish well.

Although not the most expensive book in my bookcase it is the biggest by size and the most valuable I possess.This Book of all Books has become my personal Bible since the first touch.I want to thank all the people who created it.
It really made me realize how lucky we are that we can be here to be what we are and do what we do.if one realizes the reality of the informations in this book he has no problem any more just like it's happened to me.
