Thione Niang is a mentor, political activist, community leader, international motivational speaker and consultant. Named by Complex Magazine as one of the 10 Young Activists Who Are Changing The World in March 2013, Thione’s personal journey is a testament to the power of dreaming big. Raised in a humble family of 28 in Senegal, West Africa,Thione arrived in the United States in July 2000 with $20 in his pocket, no family, and very limited English. Since all of my knowledge of Currier & Ives Dinnerware centered around the fact that they were premiums at our local grocery store, l was please to see that the Coes included a history of the dinnerware; beginning with the creation of the prints themselves, through the founding of the Royal China Company & the development of the method of printing on the raw pottery, all the way through the bankruptcy in 1986. The book includes plenty of information for the avid collector, yet is clear enough for the novice to follow. The sharp, detailed photography and the description of each piece makes the identification process very easy. They also included very realistic values reflecting true market value based on actual sales at shows, in shops or at auctions. This type of pricing is very important in today market if a dealer hopes to sell the dinnerware. The book ends with collector information, a reference section and an index.

Not a complete source of information of this china pattern

As a casual collector of Currier & Ives dinnerware, I was expecting a lot more. There were at least four more pie bakers than illustrated. More than just one version of the salt and pepper shakers, not to mention several more versions and sizes of mugs, mixing bowls, and many other pieces. I thought the book would be all-inclusive, but there just is not that much more to it than in an earlier book from many years ago. I thought the listed prices were greatly exaggerated as well. Standard eBay prices are by far lower than the retail .com resource referenced in the book. I was also surprised not to see the small company that currently makes some unusual (pie birds, egg cups, rolling pins, etc) Currier & Ives pieces in the traditional blue and white pattern. If a past company that produces 'go withs' can be featured in the book, why not a current-day producer of pieces in this pattern? Long story short: there is a lot more out there than in this book. And while many of those items are not particularly rare, it would have been nice had they been included so novice collectors can look for them.

About the Author
Michael Emch, PhD, is Professor and Chair of Geography at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC). He is also Professor of Epidemiology at UNC, a Fellow of the Carolina Population Center, and Director of�the Spatial Health Research Group. Dr. Emch has published widely in the subfield of disease ecology, primarily on infectious diseases of the tropical world. He is an associate editor of Health & Place and an advisory editor for the international journal Social Science and Medicine.

Elisabeth Dowling Root, PhD, is Associate Professor of Geography at The Ohio State University. She is also Associate Professor of Epidemiology in the College of Public Health and a research affiliate at the Institute for Population Research. Dr. Root's work evaluates the short- and long-term impacts of public health interventions--including vaccination campaigns, maternal and child health and family planning programs, and health systems changes--in low-income countries. She is also interested in the long-term effects of neighborhood social and structural environments on child and adolescent health.

Margaret Carrel, PhD, is Assistant Professor of Geographical and Sustainability Sciences at the University of Iowa. She is also Assistant Professor of Epidemiology in the College of Public Health. Dr. Carrel focuses primarily on the geography of infectious disease, with emphasis on how human-environment interactions influence the evolution of pathogens. She is also interested in understanding the impact of food production, particularly of livestock, on human health.

The book is VERY informative and very easy to read and provides very good examples

I bought this book brand new due to the fact that I was taking the author's DSP class. The book is VERY informative and very easy to read and provides very good examples. The only issue I had with this book is that the binding started to break down after a couple weeks of use. Other than the book binding, I cannot recommend this book highly enough!
