About the Author
Wayne A. Secord, Ph.D., was recently appointed by the University of Central Florida as the College of Health and Public Affairs Distinguished Service Professor in the Department of Communicative Disorders. He is also currently the Director of the National Center for Speech-Language-Pathology in Schools (NCSLPs) in Cincinnati, OH. The NCSLPs is a joint project of the University of Cincinnati (UC) and Miami University (MU). It is supported by a Project of National Significance Grant from the US Department of Education. Dr. Secord served as the Coordinator of School Speech-Language Pathology at The Ohio State University (OSU) from 1989 to 1995 and Chair of the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders at Northern Arizona University (NAU) from 1995 to 2000. He is a Fellow of the Ohio Speech & Hearing Association (OSHA) and the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA), and has received awards for outstanding service or clinical achievement from UC, OSU, OSHA, the ASHA Foundation, and the Speech-Language-Hearing Association of Western New York (SHAWNY). He has authored or co-authored numerous articles, books, tests and intervention programs on assessment and treatment of speech and language disorders, and served as the Editor of Language, Speech, and Hearing Services in Schools, a major ASHA journal, from 1992 to 1998. A former school speech-language pathologist, Dr. Secord is a frequent conference presenter and a nationally recognized expert on clinical and educational assessment and the delivery of school-based services for children with special needs.

Good information, but not worth the cost

Given how expensive the book was, I was expecting a whole lot more suggestions for eliciting each sound. I'm a parent using this with my 3 year old.

Still too technical

I bought this book thinking it would have some "down to earth" recommendations and suggestions for correcting sounds. It ended up that there was too much narration of how sounds are produced, information that SLPs should already know.

modest size, MAXIMUM intellect

Reissue of a classic collection of essays from the 60's...Currents's "God and the Strongest Battalions" is alone worth the price!...Economic, political, social, etc., aspects are all considering by the "big-gun" historians of 40 years past...Scholarly enough for the serious student, yet very reader-friendly for the novitiate...recommended in the strongest possible terms!

It seems that much more attention is paid to debating the causes of the Civil War, but as this slim volume of essays reveals there are any number of varying and subtle arguments for explaining the outcome of the Civil War.
It is probably the common view that the North winning the Civil War was inevitable, that the overwhelming preponderance of the North in terms of supplies, industrial infrastructure, and manpower ensured victory. Only one of these authors somewhat accepts the thesis of Northern material superiority. These authors are far more mindful of the fact that mismanagement or deep-seated flaws within the losing side of a conflict can be larger factors in the ultimate outcome than positive actions by the winning side.
The authors all note some inherent advantages of the South: a need to only defend territory, the vastness of the South, a transportation network, the ability to produce large quantities of foodstuffs, a commodity, cotton, of great value in the international market, a huge labor force of three million slaves, and a certain psychological advantage in the defense of a way of life.
But these authors discuss any number of factors that led, not necessarily inevitably, to the defeat of the South. The authors point mostly to both military and political malfeasance, as well as personalities and inherent characteristics of Southern society, as leading to defeat. The manner of financing of the War produced tremendous inflation; the supplies of cotton were mismanaged both as a source of revenue to fund the war effort and as a tool to force European nations to recognize the Confederacy; food supplies were confiscated at below market prices; and manpower was poorly utilized both in recruitment to the Southern army and in the deployment of labor on Southern farms.
The states rights and independent political stance of Southerners seemed to prevent a coherent national posture being formulated in winning the Civil War. One of the authors points to the anti-statist views of all Southerners as interfering with producing a disciplined army. Southern units elected their superior officers and were disinclined to follow orders with which they disagreed. In contrast to this aggressive independence, some of the authors point to a general weakening of the Southern psychological state and even a "loss of nerve." The Confederate President, Jefferson Davis, is viewed by one author as a huge factor in the defeat of the South. Davis incompetently micromanaged the war effort, pursued flawed economic strategies, was personally difficult to engage, and exhibited an ineffectual indecisiveness and conservatism in times needing forceful and visionary actions. But the one-party system in the South prevented the rise of an effective opposition that could have addressed the original poor choice of President.
Beyond any material advantage, the authors generally contend that Lincoln and Grant were trump cards for the North. Both were better suited to their jobs both in temperament and competency than anyone in the South. Some would almost suggest that Lincoln and Grant being on the Southern side could have reversed the result.
This book was reissued in 1996 after first appearing in 1960, but it is as readable and relevant as anything being written today. There is some overlap in the material covered in the essays, but the ideas are interesting and challenging. You won't see all of these ideas in a general book on the Civil War.

Interesting, Thought-Provoking Collection of Essays

This is a slim book (approximately 124 pages) that contains essays by different writers who each examine a major factor that contributed to the South losing the Civil War. Although in hindsight it appears that the South was doomed to lose, in reality, it was a close contest that literally could have been won by either side. Although the North had significant material advantages, the authors point out internal factors and decisions made (or not made) by the South that contributed greatly to it's eventual defeat. This book, although originally published nearly 50 years ago, remains surprisingly relevant and thought-provoking today.

As an interesting aside, the forward to the book was written by retired Major General U. S. Grant III, the grandson of Union General (and later President) U. S. Grant.

The Hidden Truth

Randy Wayne White's second Hannah Smith novel is a fast-paced exciting story of murder, intimidation, and corruption on the southwest coast of Florida. Hannah is a fishing guide in the Sanibel Island area who has a private detective license made possible by her detective uncle Jake prior to his death. Although Hannah does not seek work as a detective, she gets involved in trouble frequently because of her family's long and checkered past living and working in the coastal area. In this adventure, the legacy of marijuana smuggling in the 1960's involving family and friends brings legal problems that interfere with Hannah's current fishing guide business. When she investigates these problems, it is like falling in a nest of fire ants. Swarming out of the past are characters beset by drug addiction, greed, murderous rage, sadism,pit bull ownership, and violence. Hannah develops some new potentially lasting friendships in law enforcement, a handsome special prosecutor Joel and a hyperactive deputy sheriff Bertie. Also, there are good connections in the story with characters from the first Hannah Smith novel Gone (Hannah Smith Novels): Doc Ford a marine biologist/black ops agent and Tomlinson an aging hippy who carries on some of the 1960's marijuana traditions.

Hannah is an interesting character, young and attractive but somewhat reticent to get involved with male suitors. She has had two intimate dates with Doc Ford, but in this story Doc is out of the picture. He is in Venezuela involved in some black ops kidnapping action. While Doc Ford is gone, Joel puts a full courtship press on Hannah. She is dismissive of Joel's moves and is very tentative in her commitment to Doc Ford so we will see how those relationships turn out if there are future Hannah Smith novels. Mr. White still writes his Doc Ford series with twenty published adventures featuring Doc Ford. I like the Hannah Smith mini-series so far, and will read the novels if Randy Wayne White continues to write them.

A New Hannah Smith Thriller Set in the Doc Ford World of Gulf Coast Florida

Randy Wayne White's Deceived is a thriller set in the southern Gulf Coast of Florida. It features the same fictional world inhabited by his Doc Ford series of best sellers.

In this novel, Hannah Smith, a fishing guide and part-time private investigator is the protagonist. Florida's coastal history and greed, violence and corruption mingle in a well-crafted thriller. Hannah comes from an old coastal family with roots in the fishing industry and pot smuggling. Her mother has always been difficult, but since having a stroke she has become a real challenge. Hannah reluctantly agrees to check out her mother's best friend, White, who hasn't answered the phone in a few days. When Hannah goes to check out the scene she becomes embroiled in a series of violent and revelatory episodes that keep your interest throughout. There are some nice personal touches and the Florida history is, as always in a White novel, significant to the plot and interesting to anyone interested in the state.

Deceived: Florida real estate scams with a new spin

The Sunshine State has its share of excellent authors, which may be a surprise to some. In fact, editor Kevin McCarthy's now-dated 1992 title The Book Lover's Guide to Florida listed over 2,000 writers worth noting. Some could be classified as permanent residents and others as seasonal snowbirds, ranging from Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings, Robert Frost and Ernest Hemingway, to John D. MacDonald, Carl Hiassen, Elmore Leonard, and of course Randy Wayne White.

Deceived is the newest offering by this Florida author, outdoor columnist and recent restaurateur, and is the second title in his Hannah Smith series. My first encounter with this author was with his 1992 title, The Heat Islands, the second of his Doc Ford novels, which immediately caused the purchase of Sanibel Flats, the first of this series.

I had read Gone, the first of White's Hannah Smith novel shortly after it was released, looking forward to how he would present a character change to a female protagonist. It was a good but unsettling 3-star read, as the character of Hannah seemed flat. Speaking subjectively, she seemed to be a solid and independent young woman, but in a two-dimensional sense.

But Hannah comes across better and more well rounded in this new book, a tale of a twenty-year-old unsolved homicide from one of the darker sides of the Sunshine State's history: pot trafficking. This gets Hannah's focus, but another situation looms and has a higher priority. A private museum has been announced, one that is planned to be a showpiece for Florida's early pioneers and settlers. Many of Hannah's fellow residents and friends in the village of Sulfur Wells are feeling the pressure to make contributions to this new facility.

However, the entire proposition is a scam, a fraud. Hannah attempts to discover who sets out to uncover whoever's behind the swindle, and finds that things are even worse than she might have thought. The museum is actually a front for a strategic real estate maneuver, and her town is in danger of being destroy completely. As might be guessed, those behind the scam are out to make sure nobody and nothing will stand in their way.

If this seems to be reminiscent of the late John D. MacDonald's 1977's lengthy potboiler Condominium, it's no rehash. MacDonald was a long-time resident of Sarasota's Siesta Key, and he took a dim view of the proliferation of condos in Florida. Author Carl Hiassen has covered this topic a number of times, but Randy Wayne White's newest tale is an original spin on this all-too-familiar topic of avaricious real estate development in the Sunshine State.

The settings are good and will be familiar to readers of the Doc Ford novels, and it's good to see Hannah Smith evolving into a fascinating character in her own right. Speaking subjectively, she's not quite there yet, but getting much closer in this tale. This reader will be looking forward to the next one in this series.

Deceived is a good 4�-star tale, and though Doc Ford may be an incidental character here, this has all of the making for a good series. At 352 pages it's a fairly fast read that introduces more new characters. Without dropping spoilers, keep your eyes open for Hannah's friend Birdy, and let's hope that she appears again in the future. This is a good one from author Randy Wayne White, offering Florida real estate scams with a new spin.

Very insightful and informative

All of the bio info on Greg seems to indicate that he possesses the skill set and body of knowledge that would qualify him to write authoritatively on the subject that he addressed in his book. He holds a Masters Degree from the University of Pittsburgh and has an impressive resume. Greg has experience in all the facets of music ministry such as being a church musician, composer, and a director of choirs and praise bands. He also has experience teaching as a music professor. By all accounts, Greg seems to be a good model music minister (although I do not know him personally, nor have I ever worked with him).

Greg's book is quite comprehensive insofar as that it covers most (if not all) of the aspects of music ministry in a church. The fact that his book has 51 foot notes demonstrates that he did his homework. His book covers:
� The potential hazards and pitfalls a church may encounter when making the transition to a contemporary service format with a praise band;
� The details to consider when putting together a praise team and making it effective in a church service;
� How to select songs and build a repertoire;
� The different formats in a church service and how adapt style to structure;
� Each instrument's role and dynamic in the praise band;
� How to prepare and conduct rehearsals;
� And finally, how to lead the singing during the actual service.

The book gets quite technical in some parts. Greg shows his vast knowledge of music theory when he elaborated on the various types of modulations a praise band could do in the last eight pages of chapter four. He even provides scores of these modulations to illustrate his point. Greg also did the same thing in chapter five when he devoted about eight pages to elaborate on the different types of harmonies the vocalist can use. Greg provided a lot of insight and analysis to many of today's popular praise songs. He addressed their lyrical content and musical style while also demonstrating a knowledge mainstream pop music.

I love the cover of the book. It has a photo of a five piece drum set (brand name unknown) accompanied by three crash cymbals, a hi-hat and ride cymbal (brand name of cymbals unknown). I could not have selected a better cover design myself.

In chapter 5, Greg gives an analysis on all the typical instruments that could be used in a praise band. He elaborates on each instrument's distinctives and how they contribute to the overall dynamic. For the most part, I thought Greg did a pretty good job of breaking down all the instruments and their specific roles.

Overall, I think Greg's book is very good and his book would be very useful for those who want to be involved in praise ministry in any capacity.

essential for all worship pastors

Greg Scheer's immensely practical book hooked me in the first paragraph. Full of wisdom and practical insight, my copy has bright yellow highlighter marks on every page because there is so much I want to return to again and again. This book, with Kevin Navarro's "The Complete Worship" leader, are essential reading for all worship pastors, especially in a contemporary environment.

Super helpful!

I do recommend this book because it is great if you do not have too many hours to devote to the test. It goes straight to the speaking points you need to know to do well in the test. The 240 Speaking topics definitely are a major help.
I was very happy to see the results. I got a total of 109 from 120 with the least of reading at 24/30. Highly advised to study from this book but if you want a score of 26 or higher in reading you need to have a high knowledge of a lot of vocabulary as many of the toefl exams include hard vocabulary. Overall, a great help and a useful read. I highly recommend getting this book it’s pretty cheap and super helpful.

You will no longer be bowled over by simple questions

Have you ever had a problem holding a conversation with someone else? Many people have that problem, from rich to poor. This book helps you to know what you can say when people ask you certain questions. For example, if you are which country you would like to visit, there are sample answers that you can adapt to help you keep the conversation going. It is superbly simple to read and understand the book. I must say that the author put a lot of research into the book.

All I am going to say is that everybody should read the book. The sample answers to each question will make it easier for you to know what to say when asked questions in a conversation.

This book offers succinct and accurate pointers on how to deliver a high scoring speaking sample on any English proficiency test. Each questions is accompanied by a number of exercises that are aimed at honing a student's use of expressions a spoken grammatical accuracy. This dexterous aide was precisely what I was searching for! The writer went well beyond when it came down to clarifying the diverse perspectives with selecting a point and composing a discourse. The samples were to a great degree supportive and could give me a considerable measure of thoughts to incorporate into my addresses. The author has done a great job by sharing his thoughts in this kind of book and by giving lots of tips and techniques on how to learn different topics about speaking in an easy way. It's a great resource for practicing speaking, packed with expressions and answers.

Formatting better than most Kindle Commentaries!

I have purchased other Bible commentaries on Kindle only to find that they are a nightmare to navigate. Not so with this Gill commentary. Gill's commentary is a classic and should be used by all students of the Word, especially if you consider yourself Baptist. It is available online and in other formats but I like having it on my Kindle so that I can have it with me wherever I go. It is the best one I have found for the Kindle. It takes a bit of getting used to and with practice it gets easier but you do not have to spend so much time paging through to get to your passage. Also, the hyperlinks to the Scriptures are very helpful.

My new go-to commentary.

I'd used another, perhaps more widely known, commentary for a very long time...but then I found this one by John Gill. Now, after just a very short time, I only use that other commentary if I'm looking for a "second opinion" on a piece of scripture. Gill's commentary is amazingly in-depth, going much further in depth than any other I've seen. Where some commentaries have a paragraph or two about a verse, Gill has a page or two, discussing not only the doctrine and application of the verse, but some of the root words in Hebrew and Greek are mentioned when important to the understanding of the verse.

I recommend this commentary to anyone interested in finding a deeper understanding of the Scriptures. I have already persuaded several people in my Sunday School class, including the assistant pastor, to start using this commentary; everyone is very impressed with the insights he brings when I read sections of Gill's comments about the passage we're studying.

An excellent resource for Bible Study

I picked up a copy of Gill's Bible Commentary by Osnova earlier this morning and it looks very interesting. I read over the 23rd Psalms in the context of the commentary a little while ago and it did add to my understanding of what David was talking about. It's a good resource for Bible study.
