About the Author
Henry Carroll studied photography at the Royal College of Art, and his work has been exhibited worldwide. Building on his experience teaching A-Level Photography, he founded frui.co.uk, a company specializing in photography courses, holidays and events. He is the author of Read This If You Want To Take Great Photographs.

A decent introduction to people photography for photographers who have just mastered the basics but not for those over and above

Any review of this book would have to start out by stating that the format of this book is the same as its predecessor “Read this if you want to take great photographs”. It is short, at about 125 pages in length. There is a page of text followed, on the opposite page, by a photograph illustrating the point or theme discussed (i.e., color, lighting, angle, etc.). Hence if someone is looking for a lengthy academic tome on photographing people this is not the book. Then again, this book is not intended as such. It is intended as an introduction to people photography for those who have at least an understanding of the basics of photography. The author explicitly states this in the introduction (p. 7). He writes “a little technical knowledge is important too and I’m going to assume you know some fundamentals like the difference between shutter speed and aperture, leading lines and the rule of thirds”. For those who do not have at least this basic background this book would prove a waste of time. For those who are experienced in the fields (i.e., intermediate or above in terms of skill) this book would probably be too basic, even as an introduction to the subject. The book is really geared to the beginner photographer who has just mastered the basics.
The book covers most of the basics covered of the subject. These include camera angles, the use of color and B&W, lighting, etc. One technical aspect it should cover but does not is depth of field as it relates specifically to portraiture photography. Ironically it has a few pages on depth of field but not specifically on how it is used in photographing people. Another weakness with the book is that it does not cover well the interaction between photographer and subject. One can read this book and not have an idea of how to direct people in the manner needed to get them to put forth the “face” the photographer needs to get on film. Other than this significant weakness (and the depth of field issue) the book is not bad, for its intended audience (a first book for photographers who have just mastered the basics of photography). For photographers at a more advanced level or for those seeking a more thorough introduction to the subject this reviewer recommends Bryan Peterson’s “Beyond Portraiture: Creative People Photography” instead.
In short the book is decent for its intended audience but is quite basic and does not present anything over and above an introduction. It is nothing profound and does not provide any new insights or present the topic in any deep and profound or significantly better way than the typical book on the subject geared to the same audience. It does its job though. 3.5 stars.

Both practical and philosophical

This is a lovely little book, a great companion to Carroll's original Read This If You Want to Take Great Photographs. I am an absolute novice photographer, and find highly technical photography concepts too difficult to hold onto while I'm also trying to capture a shot. This book lets me focus on one small concept at a time, which is great for a novice who just wants to practice.
But this same review could have been said for Carroll's earlier book. What sets this one apart for me is a really simple-but-profound concept, and that's the importance of knowing why you're taking photos in the first place. Carroll's book has helped me think through my own sense of purpose in taking photos of people, which in turn has helped shape the way I'm taking those photos.

Excellent for new photographers

My daughter loves portraiture, and requested this book for Christmas. She especially likes the format, which makes it easy to open the book for a quick tip without committing to read from cover to cover. She is very happy with it.
