About the Author
Ian has worked in a consultancy capacity for a number of organisations in recent years including the Chartered Institute of Purchasing & Supply for a review of its Graduate Diploma. Other consultancy work involved the Qualifications & Curriculum Authority & EdExcel. Much of his training involvement has been in-company (both in the public and private sectors), raising awareness of the role and meaning of company terms and conditions for procurement staff and others with contract management responsibilities. Ian has substantial experience in delivering professional and management programmes relating to procurement law. Topics have included contract law, drafting of effective terms and conditions, contract management, and the implications of TUPE on outsourcing activities. His style is informal and 'user-friendly', encouraging extensive group participation and interaction - an approach that has been extremely effective in the field of legal training. Ian is an examiner for the CIPS at the Foundation Stage of the Graduate Diploma (Legal & Procurement Processes). He has produced Study guides on Legal Modules for a number of organisations and has written articles for Supply Management on legal issues. HIs book on Purchasing Law was published in 2005.

this is a good book to have on your shelf

Although originating from the UK, this book is a key resource for anyone working in Purchasing. The US and UK have almost identical codes, with differences almost entirely related to US state-based variations.
If you need to know the UCC, this is a good book to have on your shelf.

Bought this as an ebook. The 338 pages claimed as hard cover were really much less in the ebook version...it's very high level, an introductory book that explains basic concepts well but does not get into too much detail. Nice cover, but I had expected more.

About the Author
Maitland Jones, Jr., is Professor of Chemistry at New York University. His undergraduate and graduate degrees are from Yale University. A long-time teacher of the organic chemistry course at Princeton, he is also an internationally recognized research scientist. His field of expertise is reactive intermediates, extremely short-lived molecules that exist only momentarily in the course of a chemical reaction. Within that subfield, Professor Jones is particularly interested in carbenes, carbon atoms with only two of their bond-forming electrons linked to other atoms, instead of the usual four. He is considered one of the world's leading authorities on this subject and travels widely, lecturing on his research. Steven A. Fleming has been teaching organic chemistry for 30 years. He is Professor of Teaching and Instruction at Temple University in Philadelphia, PA. He earned his BS degree at the University of Utah and his PhD at the University of Wisconsin, Madison. He taught at Brigham Young University (BYU) for 23 years before moving to Temple University in 2008. His research at BYU dealt with regio- and stereo-controlled carbon-carbon bond forming reactions. His research at Temple University is in the area of chemical education. He has been instrumental in the development of the teaching tools Organic Reaction Animations (ORA) and Bio-Organic Reaction Animations (BioORA). These tools have helped, and continue to help, students understand organic chemistry and biochemistry.

About the Author
ROBERT SLAVIN is director of the Center for Research and Reform in Education, Johns Hopkins University, professor at the Institute for Effective Education at the University of York (England), and chairman of the Success for All Foundation. He received his Ph.D. in Social Relations from Johns Hopkins in 1975, and since that time he has authored more than 200 articles and book chapters on such topics as cooperative learning, ability grouping, school and classroom organization, desegregation, mainstreaming, research review, and evidence-based reform. Dr. Slavin has received numerous awards, including the Raymond Cattell Early Career Award for Programmatic Research from the American Educational Research Association (1985), the Palmer O. Johnson Award for the best article in an AERA journal (1988, 2008), the Charles A. Dana Award (1994), the James Bryant Conant Award from the Education Commission of the States (1998), the Distinguished Services Award from the Council of Chief State School Officers (2000), and the AERA Review of Research award (2009). He was elected an AERA Fellow in 2010.

Excellent Reference On Current Teaching Challenges

This was a text book for my now completed first education class, "The Diverse Classroom". We did not have to read the entire book, just Chapters 2, 3, 4, and 12, so I base my review on those chapers. This book is rich in detail on the challenges faced in contemporary classrooms. It is well written, and has very complete and thorough references. In addition to raising awareness of key issues, it provides many practical suggestions for application.

The other text book for the class was "Introduction to the Foundations of American Education" by James A. Johnson, et al. That book was not as good by comparison; it was much too preachy.

Eductional Psychology not boring?

This was course material for my course in Ed Psych as part of my Bachelors degree. Prejudice made me think it would be boring and uneventful. On the contrary I have found that it is well written, with clear examples and continuous and consistent internal referencing and clear examples. Mr. Slavin refers to "intentional teaching" throughout the text. The text and its setup has been cleverly pegged to this theory, leaving me with a thorough understanding of educational psychology for a starter in the field. This should be obligatory reading for any teacher, if not the ones I have had over the years who could have done myself and other students a favour by studying it before standing in front of a classroom.

A great book, even when one's required to buy it

I had to buy this book for one of my university's special education credential classes, but the book's a definite keeper. I find that I learned more about what I need to know to do my job from this one textbook than from all my other textbooks combined. At least that's what it seems like most days!

The fourth and last volume of Nicholas Copernicus' Complete Works contains the facsimiles of the original sources which were published in Volume III. The publication of such a complete set of documents, reflecting more than forty years of Copernicus' creative life, seems to be bringing a certain stage of historical research to a close. His personality and his writings are now easy of access, and easily placed within the framework of the general culture of his times. This should eliminate, once and for all, errors and misunderstandings due to the lack of direct access to the sources. Unlike Volume III, which was arranged according to subject matter and chronology, in what follows, Copernicus' autograph texts are presented first, followed by manuscript copies of his writings on money and on astronomy, and by two printed books published during his lifetime.

I bought the wrong book

I was looking for a book on self confidence in dealing with people at work. While there are some useful suggestions, some of which I have already tried successfully, the purpose of this book is too broad for my use.

Many of the business networking tips are old news, and honestly are so recognizable in my management and sales team that I see them as manipulative, learned, and rehearsed, instead of as authentic comfortable, anxiety free communication. I can reproduce them in my own life, and have, but I was hoping to acheive more lasting internal confidence.

Also, a lot of the tips are geared to producing more social activity and gaining more friends. I am not interested in this particular goal, but if you are, sucessful and inspiring examples abound, and I truly believe they will work for you.

There are two more cons in my opinion.

As Sam seems to be a very outgoing person, when she applies the golden rule, she seems to think her assertive friendliness and corny humor will be well recieved. I am sometimes turned off by people who act as she suggests, and for whom she gives examples. I wouldn't like me if I acted that way. She needs to leave wiggle room for different persoanlities and tastes.

Also there are a lot of false assumptions, both about the nature of people, namely introverts, and also about the outcomes of situations based on using her techniques. In one case she gives an example of a woman who didn't do the thing according to the book, and failed. The speculation that she might have suceeded if only she had done it the author's way, almost sounds like a passive threat....."do it my way or else." Ok ...its not that bad, but we have no way of knowing what would have happened. I prefer factual accounts to her speculation.

For myself, I used the book to prioritize my own social and business communication goals. There is one section on quiet confidence that I found truly inspiring and have made my immediate goal. I am grateful to have found that and will continue to nurture that quality within myself.

My conclusion that it is a good book if you are a shy person, who longs to be an extrovert. If you are impressed with Sam and the success stories she recounts, you can be the most popular person on the block in no time. It is also very thorough list of the psychological aspects of communication, which are an important part of any well rounded education.

Highly Recommended! One of my all-time favorites!

Sam Horn's intelligent books always stand in a class of their own, with relevant and realistic ideas that can be implemented immediately. This memorable and practical book is a gold mine of inspiration and ideas, and frankly... is a ton of fun to read!

As a professional career coach, I have read hundreds of books in this genre - "What's Holding You Back?" is one of my all-time favorites! For two years, I have been giving this book to my clients as a gift, and have consistently received rave reviews and heartfelt appreciation in response. I truly believe it's an invaluable resource for helping individuals increase their confidence and clarity. I just recently pulled it off my shelf and re-read it for myself, and was once again reminded of its powerful impact.

Chapter 4, "Conversing with Comfort" is simply brilliant! The tips provided on these pages will have even the most introverted individual communicating and "networking" with ease. If you're already an avid `networker' or sales guru - this book will feel like a dear friend, reconnecting you to what you may know, yet often forget. It will no doubt inspire you to "try on" some new ways of connecting to others in a more meaningful way.

I offer my sincere kudos to Horn for this magnificent work, and offer a sincere "must read!" recommendation to potential buyers.

Exciting

I would recommend this book. It was a beautiful story of two people coming together. Many parts of the story were unpredictable. Once I started reading it, I couldn't put it down.

A Must Read

This was the first full-length book of Ms. Kurland's that I read. I had read a short story in Viels of Time about Ian McLeod and loved it so went looking for this one. This story is about Laird James McLeod and the lady he falls in love with from the future, Elizabeth Smith. The story is both sexy and heart-warming. I loved the characters SO much! Another fabulous thing is that the stories continued in "The Very Thought of You" about Elizabeth's brother Alex and in "A Garden in the Rain" about James' brother Patrick. I would recommend that you read them all! They are not only sexy but fun and sassy!

A Terrific Author and A Terrific Book

Sometimes it is better to read a book and let the story settle before writing a review. This was my first Kurland book and I was bothered by the first part which has a repetitive style. The last part of the book was terrific. But, the more I thought about the story, and read subsesequnt books by this author which reintroduced many of the characters and updated their stories, the fonder I became of this one. Her characters are so likable and her stories so inventive, that one cannot help but admire this author and this book. But, if you read this book, do read the others as they are even better!
