Before Morning, by Joyce Sidman

There are planes to fly and buses to catch, but achild uses the power of words, in the form of an invocation, topersuade fate to bring her family a snow day— a day slow and unhurried enough to spend at home together. In a spare text that reads as pure song and illustrations of astonishingly beautiful scratchboard art, Sidman and Krommes remind us that sometimes, if spoken from the heart, wishes really can come true.

Review
* "This simply perfect book is a must-have piece of portable poetry and art for all collections."
—School Library Journal, STARRED review

* "[Before Morning's] parallel but separate threads—the innocent images of the poem, the cheery reassurance of the illustrations, and the tension of the family’s wait—give this collaboration significant emotional depth."
—Publishers Weekly, STARRED review

* "It is rare in picture books to find words and art so perfectly matched, though perhaps not surprising given the talents of Newbery Honor–winning Sidman (Dark Emperor and Other Poems of the Night, 2010) and Caldecott winner Krommes (The House in the Night, 2008). Each phrase in Sidman’s spare text is evokes the heart and the senses (let “the earth turn to sugar”), while Krommes’ scratchboard art is so intricately rendered, so full of story, that each page could be investigated dozens of times."
—Booklist, STARRED review

* "Like a snow day, a special treat with broad appeal."
—Kirkus, STARRED review

* "Throughout, Krommes’s illustrations do the narrative work, and a series of wordless spreads at book’s end provides a sweet balance to the front matter’s opening scenes, slowly easing the reader out of this mesmerizing book."
—Horn Book, STARRED review

Simple beautiful story, breathtaking art
By Bartski
This book is just breathtaking. I accidentally ordered two but am keeping both. One for our two year old to peruse (and potentially destroy as she analyzes each picture) and one for myself. The theme is something that every child (and adult) can relate to. A working parent missing her family, a child missing her mommy, a loving family that wishes time would stop and they could spend the day together. The scenes are just beautiful. The art work lends itself to a more descriptive story that one can share with a child if they just pay attention to the details. But this isn't to underscore the simplicity and beauty of the author's invocation, who poignantly tells a story to which we can all relate. I read it to my two year old before work this morning and wished it would start snowing so that we could stay home together!

"Let the air turn to feathers"
By LP Salas
Before Morning is the text of a Joyce Sidman poem set to picture book form, with beautiful illustrations by Beth Krommes. For every child who has wanted Mom or Dad or another loved one to not go to work, or who has wished for a snow day, for every adult who has breathed a sigh of relief when some activity or obligation is canceled, this book is a prayer, a wish, a celebration of the way nature (in this case, a snowstorm) can swoop in and change everything. "Let the air turn to feathers" is my favorite spread, but readers will find glorious details in both the art and the words on every page. A sumptuous delight!

Full disclosure: I'm in a writing group with Joyce, though I was a huge fan of her work long before we got to know each other.
