Paul Swartout has spent over 20 years working in the IT industry. Starting out as a developer with a small software house, he has filled a number of roles over the years, including software engineer, system administrator, project manager, program manager, operations manager, scrum master, Agile coach, and software development manager. He has worked across a number of different industries and sectors—from supply chain through manufacturing, education, and retail to entertainment—and within organizations of various sizes, from start-ups to multinational corporates. He is passionate about software and how it is delivered. Since he first encountered Agile over a decade ago, he has been committed to the adoption and implementation of Agile techniques and approaches to improve the efficiency, output, and lives of everyone involved in software development. Over the past few years, he has been heavily involved in the CD and DevOps movement, from heading the team within Nokia that implemented said ways of working to blogging, presenting, authoring, and evangelizing to whoever is in earshot. He strongly believes that CD and DevOps add massive value to the way software is delivered, and he wants to ensure as many people realize this as possible. Paul lives in a small seaside town in the southwest of the UK with his wife, daughters, and two small yapping things. He is a software development manager and Agile coach working for Microsoft, based in the MixRadio team in Bristol in the UK. He has also worked on Continuous Delivery and DevOps: A Quickstart Guide. Written from such a high altitude, it isn't useful.
By Eric N.
This isn't a very good book. It's exclusively about evangelizing DevOps and continuous delivery at a large fictitious corporation. You won't find a rundown on the industry's leading tools. You won't find any help on configuring build servers. You won't find useful discussion about various continuous delivery methodologies. There are no technical diagrams, no real-world case studies, and there's no direction on how to get started with the automation tools that the industry uses to accomplish iterative development.
The focus is exclusively on how to talk to people who are initially obstinate about adopting a new way of delivering software. That's it. And there's plenty of self-help books out there that do a better job helping you communicate technical concepts to non-technical (or obstinate) people. And for a technical book, there's a curious amount of text that's hard to read because it's written in a cursive script font.

Superficial, preachy, no meat
By SMartin
He did not say very much about continuous delivery and dev ops. I think the goal he was trying to achieve was to tell you how to create a project to lead a large company to achieving dev ops. He gave a lot of advice about how to deal with people, how to set up a project for change, how to identify activities that don't add value, etc. But even for these topics, he never described how to do it, just that it could be done and then usually pointed out that there are plenty of other books out there to tell you how. He threw in a few comments about how to satisfy suits and management types. But even then, he didn't offer any useful advice. Really, this book was a waste of time. Having said that, I could sense that he had an underlying message that could be important. But he always seemed to stop short of delivering that message. Perhaps he tried to cover too much or to reach too wide an audience.

Just an overview of methodologies and approaches
By Damir Arh
It turned out this was mostly a book about soft skills, with technical topics not being in the forefront. There were a couple of tools mentioned, and the importance of monitoring and metrics was strongly pointed out, but I expected more than that. I might be a bit biased due to my engineering background, though.
A common thread through all the chapters is a story about a fictional company which successfully implemented DevOps. It serves as an example of the journey and the practices involved. Probably the most important message it tries to get across, is the fact that there's no such thing as DevOps in a box: you can't buy it or just hire an expert - everyone needs to live it and breathe it.
In the end the book falls a bit short and remains just an overview of methodologies and approaches, with lots of pointers to further resources. Although, not really actionable on its own, it is still a good starting point to learn about DevOps: what it is and why you might want to take on the task of implementing it.
