I am a collection of oddities, a circus of neurons and electrons: my heart is the ringmaster, my soul is the trapeze artist, and the world is my audience. It sounds strange because it is, and it is, because I am strange.

After the sudden collapse of her family, Mim Malone is dragged from her home in northern Ohio to the “wastelands” of Mississippi, where she lives in a medicated milieu with her dad and new stepmom. Before the dust has a chance to settle, she learns her mother is sick back in Cleveland.

So she ditches her new life and hops aboard a northbound Greyhound bus to her real home and her real mother, meeting a quirky cast of fellow travelers along the way. But when her thousand-mile journey takes a few turns she could never see coming, Mim must confront her own demons, redefining her notions of love, loyalty, and what it means to be sane.

Told in an unforgettable, kaleidoscopic voice, Mosquitoland is a modern American odyssey, as hilarious as it is heartbreaking.

A Road Book Worth the Ride
By KC
A good road book is 2% starting point, 3% destination, and 95% road. In MOSQUITOLAND, David Arnold pretty much sticks to these numbers. Good thing. As Bilbo Baggins would be happy to tell you, it's all in the journey (you were expecting "wrist"?). And what a journey! This book is 342 pages, yet I downed it in two days. Maybe that's no big deal, but when you consider this is more a character book than a plot book, it becomes one.

So, the protagonist. She's 16-year-old Mary Iris Malone, a.k.a. Mim, and she's different. Unique. Precocious. True, naysayers might rightfully complain, "No 16-year-old girl talks and thinks like this -- like her 40-something-year-old author, I mean," but you need to get over that ipso fasto (Latin for "in a mosquito moment") or else. OK. Done. And then there are some other bits that stretch the old suspension bridge of disbelief a bit. For instance, when Mim runs away in search of real mom (leaving behind Dad and unreal stepmom), she's considered a missing child -- one who will eventually see fliers of herself. But wait. She's also carrying her cellphone. Do the letters G, P, and S mean nothing these days?

All that said, it's hard to put the book down (literally or figuratively). Mim is funny, witty, full of allusions, quirky as all get-out, and, thanks be, prone to running into all sorts of characters (savory and un-) on the road from Mississippi to Cleveland. Yes, these characters give her quirkiness a run for its money, but what do you expect for a Greyhound full of strange strangers? By the final 3%, Arnold has offered up a little of everything -- happy, sad, pathos, bathos, love interest, scary moment, mishaps, perhaps, etc. Not bad for a day's work, in other words, and one of the better YAs I've read in the past few years. Is that a recommendation? Do the letters Y, E, and S mean nothing these days?

Beautifully written narrative. But not for children or young teens.
By SBCincinnati
As a parent of three teenagers I simply cannot recommend this book to the audience to which it is being marketed. Viking has categorized this novel as a children’s book for ages 12 and up.
Mr. Arnold has written a story about 16 year old Mim, who upon hearing that her mother is very ill decides to run away from her dad and stepmom and embark on a journey from Jackson, Mississippi, to Cleveland, Ohio to see her mom.
The author does a fantastic job of weaving past and present narratives together. The phrasing in this book is often breathtakingly beautiful. Mim’s mental health is in question. Her dad and most recent psychiatrist believe she is mentally ill, in fact she is prescribed and takes Abilify. Her mom and Mim both question this diagnosis. When she runs away, Mim stops taking her prescription, so the reader is left wondering till the very end whether what is happening is real or not. Arnold masters the feat of maintaining just the right amount of tension between these two possible outcomes.
So given that this is a well written book, why my three starts instead of five?
As adult, I am not tempted to follow Mim’s footsteps, but a teenager might find her story inspiring and try to follow suit.
So here are my concerns as parent:
1. Shortly after leaving Mim decides to go cold turkey on her medication. Yes, there is the question whether Mim has even been properly prescribed this medication, but if a young reader is taking an anti-psychotic drug the last thing I would want a book to encourage is for a young person to decide on their own to stop taking it, as withdrawal symptoms can be very severe. Symptoms include depression, anxiety and hallucinations.
2. Within my own circle of friends there have been runaway daughters who caught the local Greyhound bus and ended up in the hands of sex-traffickers. Thank goodness, they ended up being rescued by law enforcement, but not before some terrible things happened to them. Therefore, I really have issues with a book where a teenage girl runs away on a Greyhound and later teams up with an adult male and remains relatively safe.
3. Speaking of the adult male, about half way through the book 16 year old Mim befriends 21 year old Beck, along with a mentally challenged teen named Walt. Mim totally crushes on Beck and decides that she trusts him enough to travel in a car with him and Walt. Now, Beck turns out to be a stand-up guy, which is good for Mim, but paints a nave picture for a pre-teen and young teen reader.
4. The language. I am not sure when it became okay to use the f-word multiple times in a children’s book, but this is the second children’s book that I have read recently where the f-word or a variation thereof is peppered throughout the book. I would have thought this would have automatically changed the category to YA or adult. (16 or 17 years old and up)

This book touches a lot of heavy subject matter, including: suicide, mental-illness, adultery, divorce, sexual assault, the rape of a child, homosexuality (The derogatory terms used by some teens describing a gay person are highly offensive), death, treatment of those with mental challenges. The breadth of subject matter is another reason I think this book is more appropriate for a much older audience.

Boom, a life changing novel
By Sab H.
This was probably a 3 or 4-star book for me up until the middle of it. And then the brilliance of what seemed an overdone smart-ass witty writing hit me. Here's what I think happened: it was like meeting a weird stranger that keeps baffling you with his/her oddities--after enough time with this stranger, strangely enough, he/she becomes a non-stranger. As in, you know this person now. Thus, once I got over the weirdness that is Mary Iris Malone and the odd too-smart spot-on writing of this novel, I fell deeply in love with it. It now shone brightly, separating this wonderful story from every other novel I've ever read.
I started collecting bits of its brilliance in the form of quotes, like the following:

"I call it Mim's Theorem of Monkey Do Monkey Don't, and what it boils down to is this: it is my belief that there are some people whose sole purpose of existence is to show the rest of us how not to act."

In the same witty note of Mim herself I would add, damn straight it is. That quote will resonate with me for the ages because it seems to have put into the exact words a theory I've had in my mind forever. Aren't those the best quotes? Damn straight.

Or the absolute hats-off coolness of the dialogue in instances like:

"So--I think my best course of action here is to just, you know, let the ridiculousness of that sentence marinate."

Boom, indeed. Let me tell you this: if you feel like I did a few chapters in, if the oddness and wittiness feels forced at first, push on and keep going. By the time you close the book at the end, you'll be grateful you did. Very few times in life do we encounter books that resonate so very deeply with a generation and its readers. This book is indeed a collection of oddities and it's told in a wonderful voice that I will miss dearly. The characters, my God, the characters. They were amazing. The slow onion-peel of the plot, beyond amazing. Do yourself a favor and pick this book up soon.

NOTE: I would say it's for the more mature readers in the Young Adult readership. I highly recommend the audio version, if you're into that.

This is truly the best book out there for beginners. It should be mandatory reading and a copy sold with every soft-top surf board. I recommend it to everyone I know who's decided to learn to surf. It's very well written, humorous, and enjoyable to read even if you're an experienced waterman.

Excellent quick reference on cult belief systems
By Jeffrey R. E. Morgan
Find It Quick is a book that should be in every Christian apologist's arsenal. It is a quick reference that lists 40 different cults / religions and their beliefs. Whether you are just beginning to learn what other religions believe or you need to brush up on the specifics of any one religion this book aims to provide a quick, concise definition of each.

The descriptions of each of the cults / religions beliefs are written in a logical, easy to understand way which helps in the process of defending Christianity and knowing how to share my faith with someone whose beliefs differ from my own.

Each of the definitions categorize the different groups in the areas of The Bible, God, Jesus Christ, The Holy Spirit, Humanity, Sin and Salvation, Death and the Afterlife, Angels and Demons, Church-Related Issues, Prophecy, Truth, among others.

I found this book extremely helpful in my quest for quickly breaking down the beliefs of a cult / religion into a manageable size. This book helped me to realize Christian Scientists believe, "The human Jesus is not the divine Christ. Jesus, a mere human, embodied the Christ, which constituted the divinity of the man Jesus." (p.60).

This is a marked departure from Biblical Christianity which affirms, "but these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing you may have life in His name." John 20:31 (NKJV)

At the end of each chapter are "Apologetic Power Points". These are a list of items that sum up the differences between Biblical Christianity's beliefs and those of a particular group. One of the great strengths of the book are the power points as they quickly let anyone see how Biblical Christianity differs from the studied group.

Each of the power points are spoken of in detail in the last chapter of the book. There are a total of 118 used throughout the book as they relate to each group. My only minor criticism is with the way in which the power points are listed at the end of each chapter.

In the case of Unitarian Universalism, chapter 37, one of the power points is "Universalism is False". How this specifically relates to Unitarianism is never explained. I point this out because it is also not explained how it specifically relates to the Unification Church which is in chapter 36.

I would have liked to see each power point explained in the containing chapter as it relates to the specific cult / religion. I must admit that this would probably have made the book 2 to 3 times larger.

I highly recommend this book to any apologist. One of the things any apologist cannot do without is information. This book will definitely help all Christians in defending our faith by making it easier to explain the differences between what we believe and what others believe.

Very informative.
By K. F. Pete
This book comes from an author who I very much recommend. The book is more suited to be a quick reference guide to cults more than world religions. Information regarding cults, such as Mormons and JW's, range from their history to their beliefs. Included in the back of the book is a list of 118 cult beliefs and practices that are refuted using scripture. Though the book does not deal with world religions it is a handy reference guide to cults and religious sects.

Does the job quite well
By John Wolf
I run a website and also do a bit of evangelism/apologetics. One of my tasks is to dialogue and or send letters to the cults, and false churches in my area (Denver, CO) of which I have no small task. This book is perhaps the best for giving a overall synopsis of the major cults. While this book does not address Progressive Liberal "Christians" (Gay/Homosexual), the emerging church, the word of faith movement, and such I have other books that touch those groups. So for the task this book has set out to accomplish I absolutely love it and find it superior to my other books on the topic (So Whats the difference?, Josh McDowell book on the cults). The apologetic power points are especially helpful to defend Biblical Christianity. My major gripe of the book (despite all its praises) is a lack of a topical index in the back. Surely this would have been quite helpful. I recommend this book to not only the bible college student, but to those wanting some good information on the cults, but also those doing the same thing I am doing, and that is challenging the cults in their area and proclaiming Christ to them.

Makes a Good Primer for Those New to Lead Generation
By Amazon Customer
When the founder of the one of the most well-known business-to-business
(B2B) telemarketing firms in the country writes a book about lead
generation, you have to wonder if he is really going to share secrets or
use the book as a plug for his company. "The Truth About Leads" by new
author Dan McDade does a bit of both.

"The Truth About Leads" explains to its readers why marketing teams'
efforts usually fail when it comes to providing so-called leads to their
sales teams. (They don't qualify the leads, and they focus on keeping
costs down.) The book also reveals the gap between marketing and sales
and suggests ways on how to better align the two departments.

McDade is at his best when he gives readers lots of food for thought on
topics such as why long-term leads are actually better than short-term
leads, why prospects stick with the status quo instead of buying, and why
sales people only follow up on less than 30% of the leads provided to
them. He even goes beyond lead generation and shares ideas for how
outside sales teams and managers can improve their efforts in deploying
sales people, monitoring their efforts, and coaching them.

Does the book share little-known secrets? It does if you're new to lead
generation. You will absolutely learn the truth about topics such as the
problem with brokered marketing lists, why a multi-marketing approach to
lead generation works well, and even how specifically to organize a
nurturing campaign by time frame and touches. All good stuff.

While the book has its merits, there are a few issues. Since lead
generation and B2B telemarketing have been around for years now, this book
feels like it's about 10 years late. The author tells readers that
outsourcing lead generation to a firm like his is the most logical choice
for fixing the problem but he neglects to mention training a company's
current staff as an option as well. Also, there simply isn't enough
tactical information to share with readers like in books by leaders in the
industry such as Anthony Parinello or Jill Konrath. It would have
worthwhile to read sample value propositions, sample e-mails, and sample
direct mail pieces for example. And finally, at just over 100 pages, the
author should have expanded on his thoughts on many of the topics
addressed in this book. Perhaps he could have shared more ideas regarding
why companies have such overdependence on marketing automation and why
that differs from what companies like his does. Or maybe he could have
shared his theories on using social media for lead generation and why that
does or doesn't work.

All in all, "The Truth About Leads" is a pretty good book that will make a
good introduction to lead generation and how to fill the gap between sales
and marketing. Those who already understand the business may crave for a
bit more.

The Truth About Leads
By John L. Corbitt
A wealth of information in a small package. Reading this book is like talking with Dan; warm, friendly, honest and lot's of common sense. If you are an executive involved with Sales and/or Marketing, you will want to read this book. Why? As businesses become more 'Lean' and rely on 'Best Practices', you know you can't afford to lose opportunities. Deciding if you should DIY, or outsource that function to experts is a decision only you can make. But after reading this book, you will have the knowledge to make an informed decision. The market data that Dan has compiled is contemporary and unique; I have not found it in any other single source.

I was Mr Sceptic but not any more!
By Fran
So I started reading this book thinking, what the heck, I've got nothing to lose. I have run a few companies over the years and this latest company I am at is no different. We always have problems with leads- but doesn't everyone? But I figured we were always "doing the best we could", even though the results we were seeing were never ideal.

However within the first chapter I was hooked. The author has captured the problem perfectly and never before have it seen it all so well consolidated in one place.

If you are chasing leads then just get this book, it's thought provoking in the sense that it perfectly explains the problem in a nutshell and then more importantly goes on to help you solving it.

Brilliant.

“Broke Millennial does a great job of presenting practical how-to money advice in a conversational way…. Chapter 1

Money Isn’t the Worst! Seriously.

In the summer of 1996, a glazed Krispy Kreme donut changed my life. Well, okay, not just one donut: five dozen Krispy Kreme donuts.

It all began on a humid morning in North Carolina when my mom decided to engage in one of the most dangerous and cutthroat suburban activities: hosting a yard sale.

As my sister and I watched her spend the week leading upto it preparing to sell off our unused goods to flocks of women wearing elastic-band sweatpants and scrunchies (this was the nineties, after all), an idea began to germinate in my seven-year-old mind. If people were willing to hand over their hard-earned cash for a used Abs of Steel video at 7:30 in the morning, wouldn’t they be likely to fork some over to buy donuts from twoadorable children?

Suddenly, visions of Toys"R"Us store aisles—and, more specifically, a Nerf Super Soaker I’d been coveting—started to dance in my head.

I pitched the idea to my parents. After a little deliberation, my dad offered to be my backer and stake the capital required to fund my enterprise—as well as drive the car to pick up the donuts. (Again, I was seven.)

My four-year-old sister, Cailin (no, this is not a typo—that’s her real name), and I set up shop using our Fisher-Price picnic table as our storefront. I strapped a teal fanny pack around my waist to hold my earnings, donned my purple baseball cap, and we were open for business.

Cailin and I spent the morning of the yard sale calling out to haggard-looking shoppers, neighbors walking their dogs, and gaggles ofneon-track-suited moms. We implored them to purchase a glazed Krispy Kremedonut for the inflated price of 50 cents. And slowly but surely, the combination of my sister’s doe-like eyes and my enthusiastic sales pitch won them over.

Handing over those donuts to die-hard garage sale enthusiasts and kind neighbors felt like grueling work during an early morning of summer vacation. Finally, with the last donut sold, I peeked into my fannypack knowing the Super Soaker was mine. Feeling the weight of all those quarters, I imagined I could even buy two Super Soakers and be the ultimate warrior of water fights at the pool.

Then everything went horribly wrong.

My dad strolled over and asked to see the earnings. After having been subjected to seven years of his tyrannical “candy tax” at Halloween (he claimed first dibs on our loot because he chaperoned the trick-or-treating, which set me up nicely to understand taxes in my first real-world paycheck), I clutched the fanny pack to my chest, refusing to show him.

My dad took the fanny pack, dumped our earnings on ourpicnic table, and carefully counted out the coins. He then proceeded to give me my first lesson in economics.

“You have thirty dollars here,” he said.

“Yes,” I confidently replied. “I am going to Toys“R”Us.”

He looked at me and smiled in that all-knowing way parents do, which left me with a sense of foreboding brewing in the pit of my stomach.

“Well, it cost me eight dollars to buy the donuts you sold,” he said while he picked up eight dollars in quarters. “Then you had Cailin help you sell them, so you need to pay her.” He handed my four-year-old sister six dollars. “So, after expenses, your net profit was sixteen dollars.” He smiled while pushing the remaining piles of quarters toward me.

I had never felt so cheated in my life.

Rather than convincing me that my dad was out to swindle us, the Krispy Kreme experience instead has become the cornerstone of my personal finance education. What my dad’s lesson started was a long traditionof my parents teaching us essential lessons about money through the use o freal-life examples, which are still fresh in my mind 20 years later.

Even if you feel that taking a child’s hard-earned donut money is cruel—which, in retrospect, I no longer do, and I could very likely do the same one day to any future kids I may have (hey, apples don’t fall far from trees)—these financial lessons served me well when I eventually struck out on my own. For example, they enabled me to get off parental welfare only three weeks after college and muster the confidence to move to New York, knowing I would survive there as an independent early-twentysomething. And even when I wasn’t making much, my parents’ lessons instilled in me a sense of empowerment over the issue of money rather than ulcer-inducing anxiety.

I quickly learned many of my fellow twentysomethings (and even thirtysomethings) don’t have that feeling of empowerment.

Sitting over sober-up cups of coffee in the wee hours ofa New York City morning, my friend Lizzie began to complain about her job working as an assistant to two high-powered executives at a major network—a job she hated with a passion, but it was a steady paycheck and provided insurance.

“Okay, so why don’t you quit?” I asked. “The whole point of moving to New York was to try your hand at acting anyway, right?”

Lizzie nodded.

“Well, you’re twenty-three with no student loans, no debt, no kids, no husband—doesn’t this seem like the right time to be working crappy waitressing jobs and nannying some Upper East Side brats in the name of pursuing your art?” I pressed.

“I don’t know—money just really stresses me out!” she burst out. “I just don’t pay attention to it and then hope I have enough at the end of the month.”

Her terrified response startled me. If a smart, savvy young professional like Lizzie, who came from a family of comfortable means and carried no student loan debt, couldn’t handle her relatively simple finances without freaking out, what did that mean for everyone else our age?

Wondering if Lizzie’s experience was a common problemwith my peers, I started asking around. Without fail, everyone responded with some version of Lizzie’s protest: Money was stressful, confusing, scary, and not to be discussed. No one wanted to touch the subject, even while wearing a hazmat suit. But not only was this fear keeping my friends from trying to understand how money worked; it was also preventing them from taking risks to get ahead in their careers and even perpetuating the deadly cycle of living from paycheck to paycheck with no plan for the future.

As I thought about this, I wondered, Why don’t I feel the same way? Am I missing something?

Then it dawned on me that growing up with parents who constantly used real-life moments to teach me about money (and deprived me of two Super Soakers) had prepared me to handle my financial affairs, and my fellow millennials hadn’t benefited from such preparation. But after seeing what money fears were doing to Lizzie and others, I needed to find a way to help other millennials experience what I had. So I decided to do what any slightly bored-at-work millennial would do: I started a blog about it.

BrokeMillennial.com launched as a place where I could take stories from my own life experiences and use them to talk about money as away to take the anxiety and confusion out of personal finance. It became my mission to prove that if I, a journalism and theater double major with a deep-rooted hatred for math, could become financially literate, then so could anyone else. While my parents were responsible for laying the groundwork for my financial literacy, I’ve always been intrigued by how money worked as well.Despite my aforementioned loathing of mathematics, numbers that were attached to dollar signs seemed to make sense to me. While I never focused on finance in college, I started reading books about personal finance basics like budgeting styles and credit scores and then moved on to studying economics and investing. These topics would find their way onto the blog as I continued to use a storytelling style to demystify basic financial concepts. Over time, I’ve cultivated and built strong financial skills and a deep knowledge of all money matters.

All of this occurred in the midst of trying to figure out my own financial life and dealing with common millennial scenarios, like notknowing how to negotiate properly for a raise, or working three jobs to make ends meet (I ate a lot of leftovers from a certain well-known mermaid-logo-using coffee chain), or trying to figure out how to set up a 401(k), or learning to stand up for myself in awkward financial situations with friends, or trying to handle moving home after college, an unfortunate reality many young professionals are forced to take these days. Not only have I survived all of these very real and important twentysomething life experiences, but I started sharing some of them on the blog, and now I’m laying my thoughts out for you in this book.

As the site began to gain a following—first by just friends and family, then a few hundred readers, and eventually thousands—my writing and thoughts on personal finance also started to catch the attention ofthe media. Since then, I’ve become a go-to expert on millennial personal finance, which has landed me on CBS Sunday Morning and gotten me quoted and interviewed in outlets including The Wall Street Journal, USA Today, Marketplace, NBC News, New York magazine’s Web site The Cut, Mashable, and Refinery29, as well as a contributor position with Forbes.

Broke Millennial also led me to a new job at a Fin Tech start-up focused on comparing financial products for users. Under the guidance of the cofounders, who had illustrious careers in banking and a combined 30 years of experience between them, I began to learn the ins and outs of how banks make money and develop their financial products, and the common tricks and traps of dealing with financial institutions. Eventually, I even progressed to taking Certified Financial Planner courses to officially authenticate my knowledge on the subject of all things personal finance.

After writing the blog for four years and consulting both friends and complete strangers about basic personal finance topics, it’s clear to me how much anxiety about money still exists, especially for young people like you, and this needs to be fixed now. Failure to do so means you may not be able to afford the kids (or pets) you want to have, there will be no money for your 30-before-30 or 40-before-40 lists, or you’ll do those things in lieu of saving wisely, and then you’ll have to work until you kick the bucket because you chose to do your whole bucket list first. This may sound dramatic, but the point is that a lack of basic financial education sets you up to be sucked into the stressful black hole of the paycheck-to-paycheck cycle.

The good news is that you can break free of that (or avoid it entirely), and I’ll show you how. Despite what Wall Street and some media outlets want you to believe, money isn’t complicated, and it doesn’t require complex formulas. Financial empowerment does, however, require taking actionable steps toward improving your situation, and I’m here to help you figure out those steps.

I Hate Boring Financial Stuff, So Why Shouldn’t I Put This Book Down Right Now?

First of all, this book isn’t a boring lecture on money. (The world doesn’t need another one of those.) It’s more like a “choose your own adventure” guide to learning about personal finance. Whether you read it chronologically or flip through at random (it makes great bathroom reading material, believe it or not), each chapter will give you actionable advice on how to improve and further strengthen your relationship with money.

The first few chapters lay the foundation for you to embark on your journey toward building a healthy financial life. I’ll help you determine what your approach is toward money and what psychological blocks or pitfalls may surround it for you, as well as show you how to assess your financial know-how and improve it. Then we’ll tackle a host of topics ranging from budgeting to credit cards, paying down debt, and managing student loans. Many of the chapters address sticky situations millennials specifically face, such as negotiating your salary, navigating those awkward times when friendships and finances collide (like what to do when you can’t afford to split the dinner bill evenly with your pals), and getting financially naked with your partner. You’ll even learn a bit about investing, buying a house, and saving for retirement—and yes, all of those are possible, regardless of how much (or how little) you earn right now.

Though each chapter features stories of my own triumphs and failures in money matters, it’s not just me guiding you through this book. You’ll also hear from plenty of other millennials who figured out how to manage money successfully through their own missteps and industry, and financial experts offer lots of tips and tricks that will turn any financially clueless reader into a financially confident one.

You can take your sweet, sweet time with this book. Read a chapter at random when you need to spend some quality time in the Whiz Palace or flip to the retirement chapter when you start a new job and have no clue how to handle a 401(k). Maybe you just want to read about someone else screwing up and then figuring out how to make it right. There will be some financial jargon and charts and stats in this book, but it’s mostly a safe space for you to learn about money with more than a dash of humor. By the end, you’re going to feel confident instead of terrorized each time you balance your budget. Like I said, managing your money can be enjoyable . . . and even, dare I say, fun.

Before you start the adventure, and even if you eventually jump around and read chapters out of sequence, I encourage you to first digest chapters 2 and 3 to help you establish your money mental blocksand financial baseline. Okay, Broke Millennial, let’s get your financial lifetogether. #GYFLT

Great Book For Learning The Basics of All Things Personal Finance
By Nick True
This book is a top notch intro to personal finance. If you're a young(ish) person, I want to start getting control of your money this book is for you. The book has a hefty focus on the mental aspect of finances, which I personally think is the most important. So I really appreciated that.

But here's a quick overview of what you can expect.

It covers
- The mindset and mental blocks you may have around money (based on how you grew up)
- How to overcome bad financial mindsets and how to create a good financial mindset
- Different situations you might be in and how to handle them (allows different people to relate in different ways)
- Ideal benchmarks for you to hit in order to be "on track" with your money at certain ages
- Different financial products (investment accounts, bank accounts, credit cards) and how to look for the best ones
- Basics of investing and retirement planning
- Basics of buying a house vs renting
- Info about credit cards and credit reports

Basically, this book covers all things personal finance in a really approachable and digestible way. I've been studying finance for years, and rarely come across something this comprehensive that still holds my attention. There's a good balance of storytelling and practical advice.

It's not an investment book or advanced level retirement planning guide or hardcore tax strategy book. It's a solid book on how to go from not knowing much about your money to totally killing it. It would be comparable to Ramit Sethi's I Will Teach You To Be Rich, if you like that book, you'll love this one too.

Highly recommend.

Couture Confessions: Fashion Legends in Their Own Words, by Pamela Golbin

Late legendary couturiers of modern fashion speaking eloquently about life, design, and inspiration. Vionnet, Chanel, Dior, Saint Laurent, McQueen—these names define haute couture, and long after the designers have passed away, their influence on fashion continues to be profound. In an exceptional compilation of the original words of these couturiers, Couture Confessions provides a unique and in-depth look at the lives and work of these fashion icons. In this engaging, beautifully designed book, Pamela Golbin, acclaimed chief curator of twentieth-century fashion and textiles at Paris’s Muse des Arts Dcoratifs, has ingeniously constructed conversations in the designers’ own words that highlight their compelling personal stories as well as essential fashion "moments"—from designers Paul Poiret, Cristbal Balenciaga, Madame Grs, Alexander McQueen, Madeleine Vionnet, and Gabrielle Chanel to Elsa Schiaparelli, Yves Saint Laurent, Jeanne Lanvin, Pierre Balmain, and Christian Dior. Featuring striking illustrations by internationally recognized illustrator Yann Legendre, each "interview" asks the questions every fashion lover has always wanted to ask, making these legends approachable, human, and ever more inspiring.

Review
"In an age of logos, fast fashion and lifestyle brands,Couture Confessionsmakes the reader appreciate designers’ genuine love of the craft — and art — of creating clothes that make women beautiful."
-THE NEW YORK TIMESBOOK REVIEW

"As the chief curator of fashion and textiles at the Muse des Arts Dcoratifs in Paris, Pamela Golbin has mounted a steady stream of memorable fashion exhibitions. . .WithCouture Confessions, her recently published book, she reanimates the voices of 11 fashion couturiers by conducting new interviews from extensive primary source material. Even while manufactured, the repartee—observations, revelations, recommendations, and predictions—amounts toa dream sequence of thoughtful, relevant tell-alls. Paul Poiret notes back in the 1920s how contemporary fashion emerges from the streets,Christian Diormaintains that 'dressed up is not necessarily chic,' and Pierre Balmain describes Dior as 'a rather fleshy man of average height.'"
-VOGUE.COM

"[In Couture Confessions] Ms. Golbin draws from interviews, biographies and autobiographies with designers such as Yves Saint Laurent, Pierre Balmain and Gabrielle Chanel to answer her questions. Her literary contrivance is like a spoonful of sugar that makes the medicine go down. In her primly polite style, Ms. Golbin manages to coax her interview subjects to revelations that make them seem very much alive."
-THE WALL STREET JOURNAL

"[Couture Confessions] is enhanced with black-and-white drawings by the illustrator Yann Legendre. And as you read it, you feel like a boulevardier in present-day Paris, sitting at a cafe and leafing through a magazine chock-full of revelations."
-THE NEW YORK TIMES STYLE SECTION

"A must read for anyone into fashion or looking to be inspired, [Couture Confessions] does not disappoint."
-MIAMI LIVING MAGAZINE

"[Couture Confessions]sees Golbin, chief curator of fashion and textiles at Les Arts Decoratifs, compiling 11 impossible interviews: impossible because all the designers - from Paul Poiret through to Lee Alexander McQueen - are deceased. Yet she found enough source material such that all the answers are never real, giving readers a chance to learn about the history of fashion via intimate conversations with the likes of Jeanne Lanvin, Yves Saint Laurent, Cristobal Balenciaga, and Madame Gres."
-WOMEN'S WEAR DAILY

"WithCouture Confessions: Fashion Legends in Their Own Words, Pamela Golbin has managed to make eleven late designers talk, perhaps more cogently than they did during their lifetimes. . . As a group, these 'improbable interviews,' as Golbin calls them, form a fascinating chronological oral history of 20th-century fashion, beginning with Paul Poiret and ending with Alexander McQueen. . .A feat of research and editing, Couture Confessions is a truly remarkable achievement."
-SOTHEBY'S

"Another plus when reading Couture Confessionsis that within these interviews there is a treasure trove of brilliant quotes from many of these deceased designers as well as personalities of that era."
-NEW YORK JOURNAL OF BOOKS

Review
This impressive book is simultaneously erudite, comprehensive and accessible. Ellis & Tucker place the social psychology of emotion in its historical context, whilst also providing an introduction to some of the contemporary social scientific work associated with the ‘affective turn’. In so doing they draw out the sometimes unexpected continuities, discontinuities and uncertainties that have characterised this field, whilst clearly demonstrating the continual relevance of emotional phenomena to social psychology. With clear aims for each chapter and suggestions for further reading throughout, this book should be a valuable resource for students and researchers alike. (John Cromby)

This is a wide-ranging account of key conceptualisations of emotion which spans contributions from a range of disciplines. The authors explore the complexities of debates involved in social-psychological accounts of emotion. The book concludes with a consideration of the status of emotion in the digital age. (Jason Hughes)
